City of Newcastle is moving forward with the next phase of recovery for the New Lambton landslip, preparing engineering designs for the long-term stabilisation of the site.
Geotechnical investigations will begin next week to determine the scope of the work, with a series of boreholes up to 20m deep to be drilled within the landslip zone and in nearby Victoria Street to assess current ground conditions.
City of Newcastle has contacted owners of the properties that may be affected, including adjoining and relevant nearby neighbours.
Initial investigation activities are expected to take around six weeks to complete, with periodic traffic interruptions in Victoria Street and minor noise impacts close to the drilling works.
Ongoing monitoring on site has not recorded any significant movement or trends that indicate the size of the landslip zone has increased.
The extent of the area where stabilisation will be required will be defined as part of the detailed design work, with planning to continue into 2027 to determine the most appropriate measures.
City of Newcastle is continuing to discuss the funding required from the NSW Reconstruction Authority for the stabilisation work, with timing of an approved funding program still to be determined.
