{"id":9573,"date":"2020-12-10T12:18:23","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T12:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9573"},"modified":"2020-12-10T12:18:23","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T12:18:23","slug":"development-supports-shared-funding-of-local-community-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/12\/10\/development-supports-shared-funding-of-local-community-infrastructure\/","title":{"rendered":"Development supports shared funding of local community infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than\u00a0$10 million\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0invested\u00a0into\u00a0priority\u00a0community projects\u00a0throughout\u00a0the\u00a0remainder of this\u00a0financial year\u00a0as contributions continue to flow from the city\u2019s development boom.<br \/>\nCouncil\u00a0this week\u00a0adopted the updated\u00a0the\u00a07.12\u00a0Local Infrastructure Contributions Plan, which allows for the\u00a0collection of development levies\u00a0across the City and nominates how they will be spent.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said\u00a0the\u00a0updated Contributions Plan\u00a0will\u00a0allow\u00a0the\u00a0City\u00a0of Newcastle\u00a0to\u00a0invest development contributions\u00a0back into the community through new and upgraded social\u00a0infrastructure, which is\u00a0essential for the health, well-being and economic prosperity of communities\u00a0and the liveability of our City.<br \/>\n\u201cNewcastle\u2019s\u00a0unprecedented development boom\u00a0is not only\u00a0helping to\u00a0transform the city\u00a0on the back of our progressive, future-focussed vision, it\u2019s also\u00a0contributing to the vital infrastructure needed to support our growing population,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cOur\u00a0population\u00a0is\u00a0forecast to\u00a0increase by 20%\u00a0to\u00a0200,000\u00a0residents\u00a0by 2041, which\u00a0in turn requires the provision of additional public facilities to meet increasing demand over time.\u201d<br \/>\nCr Nelmes said\u00a0the\u00a0list of projects\u00a0to be\u00a0funded\u00a0had been updated in line\u00a0with\u00a0the City\u2019s adopted capital works\u00a0budget priorities\u00a0and includes\u00a0projects such as the next stages of Bathers Way,\u00a0the delivery of the National Park\u00a0Plan of\u00a0Management,\u00a0local centre upgrades in\u00a0Stockton, Wallsend and Shortland, and the Throsby Creek shared pathway.<br \/>\n\u201cThis\u00a0Contributions\u00a0Plan\u00a0provides an essential mechanism through which we can collect funds from approved developments to provide for new or enhanced\u00a0community infrastructure such as roads,\u00a0shared paths and cycleways,\u00a0parks, playgrounds and\u00a0many other\u00a0public\u00a0places\u00a0to support our\u00a0City,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cFunding mechanisms\u00a0such as this\u00a0support\u00a0our\u00a0capital works program,\u00a0which\u00a0plays a major role in\u00a0creating jobs and increasing the economic output of the local area, which has become even more important in the wake of COVID-19.\u201d<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle approved\u202f1,171\u202fdevelopment applications\u00a0in 2020\u00a0with a value of $568 million across\u00a0the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than\u00a0$10 million\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0invested\u00a0into\u00a0priority\u00a0community projects\u00a0throughout\u00a0the\u00a0remainder of this\u00a0financial year\u00a0as contributions continue to flow from the city\u2019s development boom.
