{"id":9565,"date":"2020-12-09T12:56:18","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T12:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9565"},"modified":"2020-12-09T12:56:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T12:56:18","slug":"city-of-newcastle-sets-strategic-approach-to-sports-facilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/12\/09\/city-of-newcastle-sets-strategic-approach-to-sports-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Newcastle sets strategic approach to sports facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle\u2019s 10-year Strategic Sports Plan\u00a0was adopted by Council at Tuesday\u2019s Council meeting.<br \/>\nThe plan\u2019s objective is to address future demand, inform the ongoing supply, maintenance and upgrade of sporting infrastructure with consideration to current and future needs of the community, other adopted strategies and City of Newcastle\u2019s financial capacity and sustainability.<br \/>\nWith the city\u2019s population expected to increase by over 27,000 by 2031, the Strategic Sports Plan provides strategic guidance and facility direction for 14 outdoor sports\u00a0including\u00a0athletics,\u202fAFL, baseball, basketball, cricket, croquet, equestrian, football (soccer), netball, rugby league, rugby union, softball, tennis and touch football\/Oztag.<br \/>\nNewcastle\u00a0Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says the plan was developed in\u00a0close\u00a0consultation with Newcastle\u2019s sporting community and is crucial as the city\u2019s population continues to rise.<br \/>\n\u201cDuring the\u00a0development of the Strategic Sports Plan, we sought valuable feedback from local sporting clubs and associations, State Sporting Organisations, neighbouring councils and government agencies,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was this feedback that informed the draft plan, which was then placed on public exhibition for a period of 42 days, during which we received 172 submissions.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOur city currently has 63 sportsgrounds venues which are home to 140 fields that span over 370 hectares, with the need to provide additional facilities to meet the demand that will come with the continued growth of western corridor suburbs.\u201d<br \/>\nCouncillor Peta Winney-Baartz echoed the Lord Mayor\u2019s comments that the Strategic Sports Plan will be vital to ensure our community has access to the facilities needed to remain active.<br \/>\n\u201cCOVID-19 highlighted the value of getting outdoors, staying active and participating in sport, and as restrictions continue to ease, we are seeing more of our community recognising the importance of sport and recreation,\u201d Cr Winney-Baartz said.<br \/>\n\u201cAs an ever-growing city, we need to plan for future growth and ensure that our community has access to a variety of sport and recreation facilities now and into the future.\u201d<br \/>\nThe\u00a0highlights of the\u00a0Strategic Sports Plan\u00a0include\u00a0optimisation of existing\u00a0sportsgrounds, implementation of a rolling capital works program\u00a0to progressively renew and upgrade existing sportsgrounds and\u00a0improvement of City of\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s communication and administration processes.<br \/>\nA full list of the City\u2019s sportsgrounds can be accessed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/sportsgrounds\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle\u2019s 10-year Strategic Sports Plan\u00a0was adopted by Council at Tuesday\u2019s Council meeting.
