{"id":9457,"date":"2020-12-02T23:29:28","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T23:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9457"},"modified":"2020-12-02T23:29:28","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T23:29:28","slug":"city-explores-public-space-connecting-the-harbour-and-the-cathedral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/12\/02\/city-explores-public-space-connecting-the-harbour-and-the-cathedral\/","title":{"rendered":"City explores public space connecting the Harbour and the Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new public space,\u00a0inspired by\u00a0Rome\u2019s Spanish\u00a0Steps,\u00a0is\u00a0proposed\u00a0as part of the redevelopment\u00a0of Hunter Street Mall\u00a0and Iris Capital\u2019s East End\u00a0and\u00a0in the process create\u00a0a\u00a0stunning\u00a0view\u00a0corridor\u00a0of Christ Church Cathedral from Newcastle foreshore.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0\u2018Stairway to Heaven\u2019 concept,\u00a0first developed fourteen years ago\u00a0by a group of prominent Novocastrian\u00a0architects, proposes to link Christ Church Cathedral to the Harbour\u00a0via\u00a0a grand staircase.<br \/>\nThe plan seeks to open-up connections and view lines from Newcastle foreshore and the Hunter Street Mall to Christ Church Cathedral, aligning with long held strategic objectives of the\u00a0City of\u00a0Newcastle\u00a0and the Revitalising Newcastle program\u00a0to\u00a0connect the city to the waterfront.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle\u00a0proposes\u00a0to demolish\u00a0the\u00a059-year old Mall Car Park,\u00a0which closed on 20 April 2020 due to its poor structural condition,\u00a0to make way for\u00a0the project.<br \/>\nCEO Jeremy Bath said the proposed demolition of the Mall Car Park\u00a0presents a\u00a0once-in-a-lifetime\u00a0opportunity to reimagine the future\u00a0use\u00a0of the car park site.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u00a0option of\u00a0demolishing\u00a0the existing Mall\u00a0Car\u00a0Park\u00a0has allowed us to bring back to the table the concept of the\u00a0\u2018Stairway to Heaven\u2019, an idea that was first imagined well over a decade ago.<br \/>\n\u201cBy introducing a grand staircase with wide pedestrian\u00a0access,\u00a0active shop fronts, landings and courtyards,\u00a0it would bring a European Quarter feel to this part of the\u00a0city,\u00a0highlighting\u00a0the character of Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0historic CBD\u00a0and\u00a0re-establish\u00a0a\u00a0link\u00a0to the\u00a0Harbour.<br \/>\n\u201cGiven the poor structural condition of\u00a0Mall Car Park,\u00a0the significant costs\u00a0associated\u00a0to rectify\u00a0and bring the carpark up to current standards,\u00a0the City does\u00a0not\u00a0intend\u00a0to repair or reconstruct\u00a0it.<br \/>\n\u201cInstead we are now\u00a0exploring\u00a0the best use for the site, including\u00a0the\u00a0potential to integrate the site with the adjoining Iris Capital\u00a0East End\u00a0development\u00a0which\u00a0would involve\u00a0undertaking\u00a0a range of feasibility studies\u00a0for the next phase\u00a0of the\u00a0development.<br \/>\n\u201cThe proposed feasibility analysis and discussions with Iris Capital will ensure essential public car parking requirements are factored into\u00a0the next phase of\u00a0planning and that the best outcome is achieved for the Mall Car Park site and\u00a0city.<br \/>\n\u201cI will be asking the elected Council next Tuesday to refer the\u00a0concept\u00a0to the Asset Advisory Committee and the Urban Design Consultative Group\u00a0for advice.
