City of Newcastle\u00a0will increase the number of street trees\u00a0in Stockton\u2019s main street from three to\u00a040\u00a0as part of\u00a0a\u00a0$3.3\u00a0million\u00a0upgrade to\u00a0start in early 2021.
\nThe\u00a0project\u00a0will give Mitchell Street a makeover to improve public\u00a0spaces, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and\u00a0increase\u00a0shade\u00a0as part of the City\u2019s Local Centres program.

\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said that\u00a0the\u00a0investment\u00a0would\u00a0deliver a more attractive\u00a0space for\u00a0shopping and dining\u00a0as Stockton\u2019s population grows.
\n\u201cThe community\u00a0has\u00a0told us that that they love the atmosphere of Stockton\u2019s main street and shopping precinct, but they want an improved public space,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.
\n\u201cA key feature of this upgrade is the\u00a0significant increase in street trees which will provide much needed\u00a0shade and\u00a0add to the\u00a0colour and\u00a0character of this\u00a0important shopping and business centre within Stockton.
\n\u201cAn innovative design has been\u00a0developed to create space for these trees\u00a0and still\u00a0allow space for\u00a0parking and footpaths.\u00a0Local businesses will be able to take advantage of\u00a0shade for\u00a0street side\u00a0dining,\u00a0and shoppers will have a more pleasant place to spend time or catch up with friends.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re now inviting the community to view the plans on our website or in Stockton Library and\u00a0let us know their thoughts before starting construction in the New Year.
\n\u201cThis investment\u00a0is one of\u00a026 projects valued at more than $17 million delivered in Stockton over the past five years,\u00a0including\u00a0coastal protection works\u00a0and the\u00a0much-loved Stockton Active Hub.\u201d

\nPlans for the upgrade are available on\u00a0City of Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0website, and on display at Stockton Library from today until December 14.
\nThe Mitchell Street upgrade will include\u00a0drainage improvements,\u00a0new footpaths and street furniture, landscaping including new street trees and raingardens, and\u00a0a\u00a0reduction in speed limit to 40 km\/hr to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.
