{"id":9389,"date":"2020-11-29T17:16:13","date_gmt":"2020-11-29T17:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9389"},"modified":"2020-11-29T17:16:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-29T17:16:13","slug":"new-1-2m-inclusive-playground-at-stevenson-park-delivered-in-partnership-with-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/11\/29\/new-1-2m-inclusive-playground-at-stevenson-park-delivered-in-partnership-with-community\/","title":{"rendered":"New $1.2m inclusive playground at Stevenson Park delivered in partnership with community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\">\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\n<div class=\"date-info\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pull-right right-icons\">\n<div class=\"share\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"HeroImage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Newcastle\/media\/Gallery\/StevensonPark-HERO.jpg?ext=.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Mayfield West\u00a0is home to the\u00a0city\u2019s newest all-abilities playground with\u00a0the opening of a $1.2 million active space at Stevenson Park.<br \/>\nThe project was\u00a0delivered\u00a0by\u00a0City of Newcastle\u00a0as part of a major renewal\u00a0of the\u00a013-hectare\u00a0community and\u00a0sporting precinct,\u00a0which is\u00a0used year-round by sporting groups and is\u00a0a highly valued open space for\u00a0local residents.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said considerable time was spent engaging with the community to develop an agreed vision for the park and playground.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see this\u00a0new public space open and being used by families and children of all ages and abilities\u00a0following what has been a\u00a0stellar example of community consultation,\u201d\u00a0the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cWorking with the local community\u00a0has given Mayfield West\u00a0locals\u00a0real ownership of this project and future\u00a0upgrades that will flow from the\u00a0Stevenson Park\u00a0Masterplan.<br \/>\n\u201cThe project has greatly benefited from strong advocacy from the community, particularly through the Friends of Stevenson Park.<br \/>\n\u201cThis playground and the masterplan as a whole will deliver on our shared vision of Stevenson Park as a welcoming and inclusive community meeting place that offers quality sports facilities within a parkland setting.\u201d<br \/>\nVicki McCarter from Friends of Stevenson Park\u202fwelcomed the opening of the new playground and said\u00a0that the Stevenson Park Masterplan has given the community a new focus.<br \/>\n&#8220;It\u2019s been a pleasure to be involved in this project which has provided our community a way forward through the green heart of our community \u2013 Stevenson Park.<br \/>\n\u201cI, along with my fellow\u00a0Friends of Stevenson Park members, am\u00a0extremely pleased with the\u00a0engagement process which has resulted in an amazing all abilities playground, safe pathway and new BBQ and\u00a0shelter\u00a0area which is perfect for neighbourhood get togethers.<br \/>\n\u201cStevenson Park is no longer just home to sporting\u00a0fields, but\u00a0is now a vibrant hub for our community to enjoy.\u201d<br \/>\nThe\u00a0Stevenson Park Masterplan\u00a0was developed\u00a0to activate the park and create a vibrant and inclusive space for residents and visitors. Over time this will provide\u00a0more car parking, fenced off-leash area for dogs, new footpath connections and upgrades to existing sporting infrastructure.<br \/>\nStage one involved\u00a0replacing an existing playground with a larger, upgraded all-abilities space,\u00a0which was positioned in\u00a0the\u00a0most suitable section of the park\u00a0with\u00a0greater shade coverage.<br \/>\nThe playground\u00a0features\u00a0a\u00a0variety of equipment\u00a0such as\u00a0swings and\u00a0birds nest basket,\u00a0climbing\u00a0apparatus,\u00a0inground trampoline, slide, basketball hoop\u00a0and handball court;\u00a0while the upgrade also included\u00a0the installation of\u00a0shade shelters, seating, a drinking fountain and barbecue.<br \/>\nThe Stevenson Park playground was\u00a0completed under\u00a0City of Newcastle\u2019s annual\u00a0asset renewal program,\u00a0with support from the NSW Government\u2019s Everyone Can Play Grant Program. City of Newcastle\u2019s annual asset renewal program\u00a0has\u00a0delivered approximately\u00a0$6.5 million\u00a0in new and upgraded playgrounds across\u00a0the\u00a0city and suburbs during the past five years.<br \/>\nUp to four of Newcastle\u2019s 117 playgrounds are replaced each year\u00a0under the program. Work scheduled\u00a0for 2020\/21\u00a0also\u00a0includes playgrounds at\u00a0Novocastrian Park in New Lambton, Gross Street Reserve at Tighes Hill, King Edward Park in\u00a0The\u00a0Hill and Dangar Park in Mayfield, while a\u00a0new active hub\u00a0is also\u00a0being planned in Wallsend.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mayfield West\u00a0is home to the\u00a0city\u2019s newest all-abilities playground with\u00a0the opening of a $1.2 million active space at Stevenson Park.
