{"id":9366,"date":"2020-11-27T14:03:20","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T14:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9366"},"modified":"2020-11-27T14:03:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T14:03:20","slug":"newcastle-art-gallery-celebrates-the-bliss-of-domestic-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/11\/27\/newcastle-art-gallery-celebrates-the-bliss-of-domestic-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle Art Gallery celebrates the bliss of domestic life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newcastle Art Gallery is encouraging audiences to view\u00a0everyday\u00a0household\u00a0items\u00a0in a whole new light\u00a0with\u00a0the launch of its exhibition,\u00a0DOMESTIC BLISS: functional works from the collection.<br \/>\nDrawn exclusively from its nationally significant ceramics collection, the Gallery will display works of art from Australian and international\u00a0practitioners.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said with\u00a0so much time spent at home during COVID-19, now was the perfect time to remind people of the beauty and traditions associated with\u00a0objects usually found in the\u00a0home.<br \/>\n\u201cNewcastle\u00a0is fortunate to have such an\u00a0extensive and diverse art collection to draw on for its self-curated exhibitions,\u201d\u00a0Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cDuring the seventies and eighties, the Gallery played a leading role in establishing Newcastle as a centre of national significance in ceramics,\u00a0and our collection\u00a0now\u00a0features\u00a0more than 900 ceramic works by Australian and international artists.<br \/>\n\u201cNotably, the Gallery\u00a0has the largest collection of\u00a0Sodeisha\u00a0ware in the Southern hemisphere, which was donated to\u00a0Newcastle in 1981 in recognition of the Gallery\u2019s commitment to Japanese ceramics.<br \/>\n\u201cDOMESTIC BLISS\u00a0provides an opportunity to showcase a small portion of this wonderful collection, highlighting the beauty of\u00a0what is normally considered a humble household item.\u201d<br \/>\nNewcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton said the\u00a0free\u00a0exhibition\u202ffeatures\u00a0renowned ceramic artists who adeptly play with the conventions of functional ware, displayed alongside a new generation of contemporary practitioners.<br \/>\n\u201cDomestic and functional wares represent many aspects of life; the flower vase for ceremony and remembrance, the platter shared in celebration, and tea bowls representing culturally diverse tradition and customs,\u201d\u00a0Ms\u00a0Morton\u00a0said.<br \/>\n\u201cDOMESTIC BLISS\u00a0elevates everyday ceramics as works of art and reveals the artists\u2019 transnational stories of place and identity.<br \/>\n\u201cHonor\u00a0Freeman creates deceptive works that mimic 1960s Tupperware and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott\u2019s (1935 \u2013 2013) still\u00a0life\u00a0takes\u00a0cues from artists such as Giorgio\u00a0Morandi\u00a0and Chinese masters.<br \/>\n\u201cThe skill of the Hermannsburg potters transform jars into expansive desert landscapes and a new acquisition to the Newcastle Art Gallery\u2019s collection by Tony Albert marks the problematic 250th\u00a0anniversary of Captain Cook.\u201d<br \/>\nDOMESTIC BLISS: functional works from the collection\u00a0will be on display from\u00a028 November 2020\u00a0to\u00a031 January 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newcastle Art Gallery is encouraging audiences to view\u00a0everyday\u00a0household\u00a0items\u00a0in a whole new light\u00a0with\u00a0the launch of its exhibition,\u00a0DOMESTIC BLISS: functional works from the collection.
