{"id":9342,"date":"2020-11-25T07:40:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-25T07:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9342"},"modified":"2020-11-25T07:40:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T07:40:46","slug":"city-set-sights-on-tourism-to-bolster-future-of-covid-disrupted-economy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/11\/25\/city-set-sights-on-tourism-to-bolster-future-of-covid-disrupted-economy-2\/","title":{"rendered":"City set sights on tourism to bolster future of COVID disrupted economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0fresh approach\u00a0to\u00a0unleash\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0tourism\u00a0potential\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0unveiled by City\u00a0of Newcastle\u00a0to\u00a0attract a wider\u00a0visitor\u00a0audience\u00a0and\u00a0boost local\u00a0economic\u00a0COVID-recovery\u00a0efforts.<br \/>\nNewcastle\u2019s\u00a0thriving tourism industry,\u00a0prior to COVID-19,\u00a0contributed\u00a0$1 billion to the local economy each year, with more than 5.1 million international and domestic travellers visiting in 2019.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0City\u2019s\u00a0draft\u00a02021-2025\u00a0Destination Management Plan was created with stakeholders from across the industry, and sets out a raft of\u00a0initiatives\u00a0and projects set to stimulate the local tourism economy\u00a0and increase visitor spend.<br \/>\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said\u00a0work done now to\u00a0position Newcastle as a premier tourism\u00a0destination\u00a0will\u00a0play a vital role in the\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0future economic recovery,\u00a0once\u00a0travel restrictions ease further.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u00a0City has taken\u00a0the lead\u00a0to spearhead a collaborative and consolidated approach toward shaping Newcastle\u2019s future as a destination for visitors and tourists,\u201d said Cr Nelmes.<br \/>\n\u201cWith a pipeline of new-build hotel investment, including the five-star Kingsley part of the\u00a0Crystalbrook\u00a0Collection in the former City Administration Centre and plans underway to develop the historic Newcastle Post Office into a hotel,\u00a0and Iris Capital\u2019s QT Hotel,\u00a0Newcastle is well positioned to attract a new wave of domestic and international visitors, once travel restrictions ease further.<br \/>\n\u201cThe City is committed to\u00a0driving\u00a0the growth and sustainability of the visitor economy\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0new tourism\u00a0plan\u00a0designed as\u00a0a visionary tool, instrumental to driving Newcastle\u2019s social and economic recovery.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Destination Management Plan provides our City with a blueprint to work together across government and industry to create meaningful partnerships in order to achieve\u00a0a\u00a0shared vision for Newcastle as a premier visitor destination, showcasing\u00a0the City\u2019s\u00a0rich art, cultural and culinary scene, a vibrant night-time economy and experiences that celebrate our natural environment and creative community.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Plan highlights the significant opportunity\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0tourism-led\u00a0economic\u00a0recovery\u00a0from signature attractions,\u00a0while developing\u00a0tourism products and experiences, particularly across\u00a0places like\u00a0Blackbutt Reserve, the Bathers Way, Newcastle Art Gallery,\u00a0and Fort\u00a0Scratchley.<br \/>\n\u201cWe aim to build a\u00a0thriving\u00a0visitor economy\u00a0in Newcastle\u00a0that will\u00a0lead to population, economic and jobs growth, and\u00a0our City\u2019s\u00a0success\u00a0will be one shared by\u00a0the\u00a0greater Hunter Region, NSW and Australia.<br \/>\n\u201cTo succeed\u00a0as a sector,\u00a0industry, government and operators need to collaborate and find ways to work together,\u00a0by\u00a0positioning\u00a0Newcastle as the destination of choice\u00a0in order to\u00a0attract\u00a0the\u00a0tourist\u00a0dollar,\u00a0in an increasingly\u00a0competitive\u00a0market.\u201d<br \/>\nCouncillors will vote\u00a0at\u00a0tonight\u2019s Ordinary Council Meeting\u00a0to place the draft\u00a0Destination Management Plan\u00a0on public exhibition\u00a0from 25 November 2020 until 6 January 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0fresh approach\u00a0to\u00a0unleash\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0tourism\u00a0potential\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0unveiled by City\u00a0of Newcastle\u00a0to\u00a0attract a wider\u00a0visitor\u00a0audience\u00a0and\u00a0boost local\u00a0economic\u00a0COVID-recovery\u00a0efforts.
