Image courtesy Newcastle Libraries Local History Collections.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nOver the decades,\u00a0Newcastle and Ube have developed strong connections in\u00a0education, youth exchange, economics, sport and art, which were celebrated\u00a0when\u00a0the City hosted Consul-General Mr Kiya Masahiko\u00a0and Consul in Charge of\u00a0General Affairs and Information and Culture, Mr\u202fShinichi\u00a0Murata\u00a0on a diplomatic visit\u00a0to Newcastle.<br \/>\nMr Masahiko and Mr Murata\u00a0were\u00a0presented with a commemorative book, titled\u00a0<em>Sister Cities Newcastle and Ube: celebrating 40 years<\/em>, produced by the City\u00a0to mark the auspicious occasion.<br \/>\nThe Consuls also received a demonstration of a curated, interactive digital story-wall\u00a0exhibition\u00a0showcasing the Sister City history at the\u00a0City Administration Centre\u2019s Digital Library.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"32457Shootlorimer-COPY-Large-web-1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-of-Newcastle-celebrates-40th-Sister-City-anni\/32457Shootlorimer-COPY-Large-web-1.jpg\" alt=\"32457Shootlorimer-COPY-Large-web-1.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes presents the commemorative book to the Consul-General of Japan in Sydney, Mr Kiya Masahiko, in front of the digital story-wall exhibition at the City&#8217;s Digital Library.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes\u00a0recognised the ongoing significance of this mutually beneficial relationship as both Newcastle and Ube continue to undergo growth and transformation.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was Lord Mayor Joy Cummings\u2019 vision,\u00a0when the declaration was signed,\u00a0for our two great cities to enjoy lasting friendship, good health and prosperity, and I am proud to say our Sister City\u00a0ties remain as strong as ever,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile we are living through an unprecedented time due to the many challenges posed by the COVID-19 global pandemic, it is but another chapter in the history book of our Sister City relationship, as we rise together to overcome adversity as we have done in the past.<br \/>\n\u201cCity of Newcastle congratulates Ube City on achieving this joint milestone and looks forward to the continuation of our cities\u2019\u00a0relationship\u00a0over the years to come.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Sister Cities Newcastle and Ube: celebrating 40 years\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0available for loan from Newcastle Libraries.
