{"id":9209,"date":"2020-11-15T14:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T14:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9209"},"modified":"2020-11-15T14:30:32","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T14:30:32","slug":"nation-leading-program-tackling-extremism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/11\/15\/nation-leading-program-tackling-extremism\/","title":{"rendered":"NATION-LEADING PROGRAM TACKLING EXTREMISM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Targeting hate crime, building community harmony and responding to threats of violent extremism are the focus of an additional $12.3 million investment through the NSW Government\u2019s 2020-21 Budget.<br \/>\nMinister for Counter Terrorism\u00a0Anthony Roberts said the funding will boost a number of successful programs.<br \/>\n\u201cThe NSW Government understands\u00a0that there is no one path to violent extremism and the challenge is ever evolving,\u201d Mr Roberts said<br \/>\n\u201cThis additional funding will work to\u00a0limit the spread and influence of all\u00a0forms of violent extremism and will also improve our response to\u00a0threats fueled by grievances and fixations.\u201d<br \/>\nAttorney General Mark Speakman said this funding will support a range of services across government and throughout the community to combat violence and hate.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are a strong and connected community. This has shone through in NSW\u2019s response to the devastating bushfires and the COVID pandemic,\u201d Mr Speakman said.<br \/>\n\u201cBut we cannot ignore the fact that a small number of individuals would like to divide us, incite fear and threaten our safety. This funding will limit the spread and influence of violent extremism and boost our response to threats fueled by hatred and prejudice.\u201d<br \/>\nMinister for Police and Emergency Services said this package will include an injection of funding for the NSW Police Force\u2019s Engagement and Hate Crime Unit.<br \/>\n\u201cWe will strengthen the NSW Police Force\u2019s capability to address hate crime, by providing additional training for frontline officers and additional resources to assist in the investigation of these heinous crimes,\u201d Mr Elliott said.<br \/>\n\u201cCommunity safety is the NSW Government\u2019s number one priority and this funding builds on our ongoing commitment to support the hardworking men and women of the NSW Police Force who protect us from those who seek to sow hatred and violence.\u201d<br \/>\nNSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said countering violent extremism and hate crime has been a long-standing priority for the Force.<br \/>\n\u201cThe NSW Police Force remains committed to detecting, intervening, and most importantly, preventing bias-motivated and fixated person crimes,\u201d the Commissioner said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe safety of the people of NSW always comes first, and we will continue to target and take swift action against anyone who seeks to do harm regardless of their motivation.\u201d<br \/>\nFunding will also be allocated to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deliver case management, counselling and support to identify at-risk individuals and divert them away from extremism<\/li>\n<li>Campaigns and projects targeted at countering hatred and building community cohesion, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/multicultural.nsw.gov.au\/compact\/\">Community Partnership Action (COMPACT) grants program<\/a>\u00a0and the online\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.removehatefromthedebate.com\/\">Remove Hate from the Debate<\/a>\u00a0campaign<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This funding builds on the four-year $47 million package announced in 2016 in response to the rise of violent extremism and accelerated after the terrorist attack in Parramatta, which tragically cost the life of NSW Police accountant Curtis Cheng.<br \/>\nThese new measures have been developed in line with the outcomes of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cveevaluation.nsw.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0006\/771963\/ACIL-Allen-NSW-CVE-Evaluation-Final-Report-October-2019.pdf\">evaluation<\/a>\u00a0of the 2016 package.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Targeting hate crime, building community harmony and responding to threats of violent extremism are the focus of an additional $12.3 million investment through the NSW Government\u2019s 2020-21 Budget.
