{"id":9049,"date":"2020-11-07T04:25:35","date_gmt":"2020-11-07T04:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=9049"},"modified":"2020-11-07T04:25:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-07T04:25:35","slug":"newcastle-art-gallery-ready-to-rock-with-rare-images-of-music-royalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/11\/07\/newcastle-art-gallery-ready-to-rock-with-rare-images-of-music-royalty\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle Art Gallery ready to rock with rare images of music royalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music lovers will be given a backstage pass to\u00a0some of the biggest bands\u00a0and gigs\u00a0in the world when Newcastle Art Gallery showcases rarely seen and\u00a0previously\u00a0unreleased\u00a0photographs of Australian and international\u00a0musicians.<br \/>\nAt a time when\u00a0COVID-19 restrictions have seriously curtailed the slew of\u00a0gigs usually packed into our summer\u00a0music schedules, the Gallery is thrusting visitors\u00a0into the thick of the action with\u00a0its upcoming exhibition,\u00a0WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Luke Kellett, Councillor Carol Duncan, Maclay Heriot holding his image of Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies, Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton, Sophie Howarth and Charlie Hardy (kneeling at front).\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Newcastle-Art-Gallery-ready-to-rock-with-rare-imag\/We-Can-Be-Heroes-exhibition-web.jpg\" alt=\"We-Can-Be-Heroes-exhibition-web.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nFrom\u00a0homegrown local musicians to international superstars, the exhibition showcases\u00a0major\u00a0acts from the 70s through to the contemporary heroes of today,\u00a0including everyone from The Beatles, David Bowie\u00a0and Iggy Pop, to\u00a0Dave Grohl,\u00a0Gang of Youths,\u00a0Midnight Oil and\u00a0Silverchair.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0images\u00a0will\u00a0also take audiences into the epicentre of festivals such as Austin City Limits, Big Day Out, and Lollapalooza, featuring the work of\u00a0leading Australian music photographers\u00a0including\u00a0Charlie Hardy and Luke Kellett, who are both based in Newcastle, as well as Sydneysiders Maclay Heriot and Sophie Howarth.<br \/>\nThe exhibition will\u00a0also\u00a0be supported with works of art drawn from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said the exhibition offered a\u00a0window into\u00a0the\u00a0excitement and energy of live music.<br \/>\n\u201cAt a time when COVID-19\u00a0restrictions have changed the way we experience live music, this exhibition\u00a0is a wonderful\u00a0reminder of the\u00a0joy of going to a gig and the memories that musicians create for their fans,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\nNewcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton said the exhibition also showcased the amazing talents of the photographers who help preserve these moments in history.<br \/>\n\u201cThis major summer exhibition celebrates\u00a0not only the\u00a0connection and relationship between the photographer and their subject,\u00a0it\u00a0also\u00a0showcases\u00a0their\u00a0incredible artistic talent\u00a0in\u00a0capturing unforgettable moments\u00a0through rarely seen touring\u00a0photos, unreleased press images and views from the stage that very few of us get to experience.\u201d<br \/>\nLeading up to\u00a0the exhibition, Newcastle Art Gallery\u00a0put\u00a0a call-out to\u00a0Newcastle music fans to submit\u00a0digital copies of posters from their favourite\u00a0local\u00a0gigs, with a selection to be included in the Gallery\u2019s interactive smart space.<br \/>\nWE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass\u00a0will run from\u00a014 November 2020 \u2013 14 February 2021\u00a0at the Newcastle Art Gallery.<br \/>\n<strong>Musicians\u00a0featured in the exhibition:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nAngus and Julia Stone, Baker Boy, Boy and Bear, Dave Grohl, David Bowie, Delta Riggs, DMA&#8217;s, Dr G Yunupingu, Flight to Dubai, Gang of Youths, Garbage, Grinspoon, Iggy Pop, Kira Puru, Kwame, Midnight Oil,\u00a0Mo\u2019Ju\u00a0(formerly known as\u00a0Mojo Juju), Nick Cave, Paul Dempsey, PJ Harvey,\u00a0Powderfinger, Saltwater Band, San Cisco, Silverchair, Skeggs, The Beatles, The Jungle Giants, The\u00a0Preatures, The Prodigy, Violent Soho, You Am I,\u00a0plus more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Music lovers will be given a backstage pass to\u00a0some of the biggest bands\u00a0and gigs\u00a0in the world when Newcastle Art Gallery showcases rarely seen and\u00a0previously\u00a0unreleased\u00a0photographs of Australian and international\u00a0musicians.
