City of Newcastle is developing a\u00a010-year Economic Development Strategy, which will play a critical role in guiding the city\u2019s COVID-19 economic recovery.
\nThe community is invited to shape the Strategy, which will envision a future for the Newcastle economy and strive to empower, retain and attract people with skills of the future and create equal opportunity for all\u00a0members of the community.
\nYoung people will provide an important voice in the conversation, with the COVID-19 economic crisis disproportionately impacting\u00a018-to-25-year-olds, driving the Hunter Region\u2019s youth unemployment rate to 20.7 per cent.
\nCity of Newcastle has partnered with TAFE NSW\u00a0Newcastle, HunterNet and\u00a0Hunter Young Professionals\u00a0to directly engage with young people and facilitate discussion through\u00a0multiple\u00a0youth-specific workshops.

\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said with a further almost one in 10 Novocastrians currently unemployed, it was more important than ever to identify future economic opportunities across the board.
\n\u201cCity of Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0Economic Development Strategy\u00a0will\u00a0focus\u00a0on long-term actions to help create new jobs, drive investment and promote innovation,\u201d\u00a0Cr Nelmes said.
\n\u201cWhen the pandemic first hit, City of Newcastle was one of the first Councils across Australia to act, adopting a $5.5 million Community and Economic Resilience Package with a range of programs to support community wellbeing and maximise cashflow.\u00a0The Resilience Package was endorsed\u00a0six days before the Federal Government announced the\u00a0JobKeeper\u00a0wage subsidy.\u201d
\nDeputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the City had also provided collaborative leadership and advocacy through the facilitation of the City Taskforce.
\n\u201cNow, we are turning our attention to creating new\u00a0long-term\u00a0opportunities for our city, and we are seeking the community\u2019s input,\u201d Cr Clausen said.
\nA range of programs will be\u00a0explored\u00a0under\u00a0four\u00a0key pillars: Enabling Skills, Enabling Innovation,\u00a0City-Shaping Initiatives and Facilitating a Vibrant City.
\nCommunity members can have their say via\u00a0City of Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0until\u00a0Monday 7\u00a0December.\u00a0City of Newcastle will also conduct face-to-face and online workshops with\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0networks, including the City Taskforce and Strategy\u00a0and Innovation Committee.
