Construction\u00a0of this link\u00a0was brought forward as part of the City\u2019s record $116 million\u00a0COVID-19-stimulus capital works\u00a0budget\u00a0in recognition of\u00a0residents\u2019\u00a0newfound love for cycling\u00a0during\u00a0lockdown.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle received $600,000 from the NSW Government\u2019s 2020\/21 Walking and Cycling Program to assist with the construction of this stage of the project.<br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0said investment in cycleway infrastructure\u00a0would\u00a0enable\u00a0cycling to play an even larger role within Newcastle\u2019s transport\u202fmix in the future.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are committed to promoting cycling as\u202fa\u202fsafe and attractive\u00a0transport option for residents, families, commuters and recreational users, which is why\u202fexpansion and improvement of the\u202fcycleway\u202fnetwork is one of the City\u2019s priority projects,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cImproving and expanding Newcastle\u2019s cycling network is also an important investment in the future of our city, in line with the adopted Newcastle Cycling Strategy and Action Plan.<br \/>\n\u201cThe start of construction is an important step towards the completion of the overall City Centre to Merewether Beach cycleway project, which will provide a first-class route\u202fbetween the inner city and one of our most popular beaches\u201d<br \/>\nCouncillor and cycling enthusiast John Mackenzie\u00a0said he was\u00a0pleased to see the project\u00a0kick off.<br \/>\n\u201cThe community\u00a0has\u00a0been very clear in stating that improved cycleways are a top priority\u00a0and I know this\u00a0link\u00a0will be enjoyed by residents, commuters and those visiting this\u00a0great part of Newcastle.\u00a0I am happy to see works starting and will be watching and following\u00a0the project with interest.\u201d<br \/>\nAlmost $5 million has been allocated to cycleways projects under the revised 2020-21 capital works budget, including $3.1 million for the Merewether to The Junction cycleway, as well as funding for a missing cycleway link on University Drive between Blue Gum Road and the inner-city bypass in Birmingham Gardens.<br \/>\nTo find out more and keep updated on\u00a0stage one of\u00a0the City Centre\u00a0to Merewether\u00a0cycleway\u00a0visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/works\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/works<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has started construction on the first stage of a cycleway\u00a0linking the City Centre to Merewether Beach.
