The Inquiry will examine the social and economic benefits of\u00a0the creative arts and how to recognise, measure and grow opportunities,\u00a0as well as the impacts of COVID-19 and how to best ensure cohesive policy between all levels of government.<br \/>\nWith a thriving arts and cultural scene and more artists per capita than any other city in Australia, Newcastle\u2019s makers, traders, creators, artists, designers and producers\u00a0contribute to a billion-dollar industry in the Hunter Region\u00a0alone\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the significance of which is not lost on the City of Newcastle\u2019s COVID-19 City Taskforce.<br \/>\nThe Taskforce, comprising of 17 leading organisations and employers including\u00a0ICAN, recognises the importance of the city\u2019s vibrant creative and cultural industries and believes more needs to be done to create new and ongoing opportunities in the Greater Newcastle area, and\u00a0that addressing\u00a0inconsistencies in State and Federal Government funding\u00a0is critical to the sector\u2019s recovery.<br \/>\nChair, Lord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes\u00a0said the City had worked closely with\u00a0ICAN\u00a0to develop The Newcastle Response \u2013 Arts Sector, which posed a number of\u00a0policy\u00a0asks to the State and Federal Governments.<br \/>\n\u201cTargeted support measures are needed\u00a0to ensure the sustainability of creative industries, such as the establishment of a cultural infrastructure fund that Gateway Cities like Newcastle, Wollongong and Geelong can access, therefore reducing funding inequity, and government\u00a0partnership on local arts and culture infrastructure projects like the Newcastle Art Gallery expansion,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cCity of Newcastle\u2019s Parliamentary Inquiry submission will note these recommendations formed in close consultation with\u00a0ICAN,\u00a0which has seen first-hand the devastating impacts to our arts and cultural community.\u201d<br \/>\nCouncillor Carol Duncan said the diversity of creative talent in Newcastle was celebrated and revered.<br \/>\n\u201cThe makers and creators contribute so heavily to the fabric of our city\u00a0and improve social outcomes, the value of which will only grow as we chart a path to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d Cr Duncan said.<br \/>\nICAN\u00a0Interim\u00a0Chair Annette Hubber\u00a0said now more than ever, creatives needed our support.<br \/>\n\u201cThe city\u2019s arts and recreation businesses, of which there are more per 10,000 people than anywhere else in NSW,\u00a0breathe life into our city and unify the community through storytelling,\u201d Ms\u00a0Hubber\u00a0said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe impacts of COVID-19 restrictions have been devastating, which is why support from all levels of government is so vital to the industry\u2019s recovery and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has\u00a0reinforced\u00a0its support for creative industries decimated by the impacts of COVID-19, collaborating with the Independent Creative Alliance Newcastle (ICAN) on key advocacy work.
