{"id":8387,"date":"2020-09-26T11:39:25","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T11:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=8387"},"modified":"2020-09-26T11:39:25","modified_gmt":"2020-09-26T11:39:25","slug":"teen-charged-critical-incident-launched-after-serious-crash-lake-macquarie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/09\/26\/teen-charged-critical-incident-launched-after-serious-crash-lake-macquarie\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen charged, critical incident launched after serious crash \u2013 Lake Macquarie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A teenage driver has been charged and police have launched a critical incident following a serious crash that left 11 people injured, one critically, at Lake Macquarie overnight.<br \/>\nJust before <a dir=\"ltr\" href=\"x-apple-data-detectors:\/\/1\">1.15am<\/a> (Saturday 26 September 2020), officers from Lake Macquarie Police District were patrolling when they saw a Holden Statesman leave a service station on Main Road, Edgeworth.<br \/>\nDue to the manner of driving, police conducted a U-turn to follow the vehicle.<br \/>\nThe Holden continued to travel on Main Road and allegedly collided with a Toyota HiAce van, being operated as a taxi, at the intersection of Garth Street.<br \/>\nParamedics treated 11 people for various injuries who were all taken to John Hunter Hospital.<br \/>\nThe taxi driver, a 46-year-old man, and two female passengers, aged 24 and 42, suffered serious injuries.<br \/>\nThe younger woman remains in a critical condition and the driver in a serious but stable condition.<br \/>\nThree further taxi passengers \u2013 men, aged 28, 35, and 47 \u2013 suffered minor injuries.<br \/>\nThree passengers in the Holden \u2013 two 14-year-old girls and a 17-year-old boy \u2013 suffered serious injuries. The Holden driver and a fourth passenger, both aged 17, suffered minor injuries.<br \/>\nThe Holden driver was arrested and subjected to a roadside breath test, allegedly returning a positive result.<br \/>\nHe was taken to hospital, under police guard, where he underwent mandatory testing.<br \/>\nThe teen has since been released and taken to Toronto Police Station, where he was charged with 15 offences, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm- drive manner dangerous (x3)<\/li>\n<li>cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle (x8)<\/li>\n<li>negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm)<\/li>\n<li>drive motor vehicle during disqualification period<\/li>\n<li>negligent driving, and<\/li>\n<li>not stop before lights at red light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He was refused bail to appear at a children\u2019s court tomorrow (<a dir=\"ltr\" href=\"x-apple-data-detectors:\/\/4\">Sunday 27 September 2020<\/a>).<br \/>\nA critical incident team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the crash.<br \/>\nThat investigation will be subject to independent review.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A teenage driver has been charged and police have launched a critical incident following a serious crash that left 11 people injured, one critically, at Lake Macquarie overnight.
