\nThe City\u00a0began a\u00a0four-year\u00a0tree replacement program\u00a0in\u00a0Foreshore Park during\u00a02017 as part of its preparations for the inaugural Newcastle 500 Supercars event.

\nSince then, City of Newcastle has planted 51 advanced trees, including 10 Kentia palms and 41 Norfolk Island pines,\u00a0as part of its\u00a0target to increase the\u00a0amount\u00a0of shaded\u00a0canopy\u00a0in the\u00a0popular\u00a0East End park from\u00a02,800sqm to\u00a09,800sqm.
\nThe\u00a0tree plantings\u00a0to date\u00a0have been located around the perimeter of the park, strengthening the boundaries of the\u00a0space and reinforcing the avenue plantings at Wharf Road. They have already contributed a projected\u00a0shade\u00a0canopy of 7,370sqm, or more than 75 per cent of\u00a0the City\u2019s overall goal.
\nNewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said\u00a0that although there will be some replacement planting occurring\u00a0with advanced trees in the nursey now ready, the majority of the remaining\u00a0plantings would be completed in conjunction with the\u00a0Harbour\u00a0Foreshore\u00a0Precinct Masterplan, which has\u00a0recently\u00a0finished its first phase of community\u00a0engagement.
\n\u201cThis is a generational opportunity to reimagine one of the City\u2019s premier parks to suit the needs of a growing community\u00a0following\u00a0extensive community engagement,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.
\n\u201cThe masterplan process will look at the current functions and management of the park and how they might be better utilised now and into the future.
\n\u201cEarly feedback has\u00a0highlighted\u00a0the\u00a0significance\u00a0of the\u00a0Foreshore\u2019s\u00a0environment to the community, with 70 per cent of those surveyed\u00a0nominating tree planting as the most important natural element of the Foreshore masterplan.
\n\u201cWe are proud of the work that has been completed to date at Foreshore Park, with the new tree plantings offering significantly more shade cover than was previously\u00a0available.
\n\u201cThe remaining trees and shrubs required to achieve the commitment for canopy increase will be placed in accordance with a community-endorsed masterplan.
\n\u201cThese new plantings will help with the integration of nature and the built environment and strengthen the character and use of the park, while significantly contributing to the City\u2019s biodiversity and environmental need.\u201d
\nCity of\u00a0Newcastle\u00a0and the masterplan consultants will work closely with stakeholders to achieve the desired character for the Harbour Foreshore\u00a0and prepare a masterplan that will\u00a0produce\u00a0the targeted canopy cover for the site.
