{"id":8234,"date":"2020-09-17T06:52:25","date_gmt":"2020-09-17T06:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=8234"},"modified":"2020-09-17T06:52:25","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T06:52:25","slug":"new-emergency-operations-centre-opened-ahead-of-bushfire-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/09\/17\/new-emergency-operations-centre-opened-ahead-of-bushfire-season\/","title":{"rendered":"New Emergency Operations Centre opened ahead of bushfire season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has\u00a0unveiled its new\u00a0local\u00a0emergency operations centre\u00a0(LEOC)\u00a0to\u00a0representatives from\u00a0Police, State Emergency\u00a0Services\u00a0and Fire and Rescue\u00a0ahead\u00a0of the\u00a0official start of bushfire season on 1 October.<br \/>\nThe new LEOC\u00a0at the City\u00a0Administration Centre, 12 Stewart Avenue, replaces the\u00a030-year-old facility at Tighes Hill,\u00a0which\u00a0no longer complies\u00a0with modern standards, nor is it compatible with partnering emergency services\u2019 technologies.\u00a0This meant a temporary response centre\u00a0had to be established at Newcastle Library during the 2019 catastrophic bush fire event.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0LEOC\u2019s\u00a0technology and flexible design\u00a0allow\u00a0emergency services, including\u00a0Fire and Rescue NSW,\u00a0NSW Rural\u00a0Fire\u00a0Service, NSW Police, Ambulance NSW and the NSW SES, to join with\u00a0City of Newcastle\u00a0and other agencies to coordinate\u00a0responses to a range\u00a0of incidents and natural disasters.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"LEOC-1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/New-Emergency-Operations-Centre-opened-ahead-of-bu\/LEOC-1.jpg\" alt=\"LEOC-1.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes (centre) and Emergency Management Coordinator Leanne Bell (right) with emergency services personnel in the new Local Emergency Operations Centre.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nFeatures\u00a0include\u00a0multiple\u00a085 and 65-inch\u00a0screens\u00a0with live-stream capabilities; a 16-seat conferencing facility with wireless presentation and TV connectivity for news coverage, weather and traffic updates; 32-seat room\u00a0and the ability to create breakaway spaces; as well as a commercial kitchen capable of providing meals\u00a0in the event of\u00a0a city-wide blackout.<br \/>\nThe co-location of the\u00a0LEOC on the sixth floor of the City Administration Centre ensures this\u00a0comprehensive\u00a0range of amenities and support facilities are readily available in a central location with access to backup power\u00a0on site\u00a0via\u00a0two\u00a0diesel-powered\u00a0generators.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0said the new\u00a0LEOC\u00a0would allow\u00a0emergency services improved connectivity, efficiency and personal comfort, which could prove\u00a0crucial in a major incident.<br \/>\n\u201cThe way in which we respond to emergencies has\u00a0significantly\u00a0evolved with advancements in technology,\u201d\u00a0the Lord Mayor\u00a0said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis\u00a0new\u00a0state-of-the-art facility launches our emergency response operations into the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Century, providing the best possible facilities and resources to support\u00a0our emergency agencies\u00a0on the ground assisting the community\u00a0in times of disaster when they are counting on us to respond swiftly and efficiently.\u201d<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle is required to provide a Local Emergency Operations Control facility under the\u00a0<em>State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has\u00a0unveiled its new\u00a0local\u00a0emergency operations centre\u00a0(LEOC)\u00a0to\u00a0representatives from\u00a0Police, State Emergency\u00a0Services\u00a0and Fire and Rescue\u00a0ahead\u00a0of the\u00a0official start of bushfire season on 1 October.
