\nThe site operated as\u00a0a tip from\u00a01974, taking waste from\u00a0across the Hunter\u00a0including\u00a0from the\u00a0clean-up\u00a0of the Newcastle Earthquake, before it was closed and capped in 1995.

\nThe City has\u00a0worked with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to monitor and assess the site, with\u00a0expressions of interest called\u00a0tomorrow, Saturday 12 September\u00a0for contractors to\u00a0enhance\u00a0the\u00a025-year-old capping and\u00a0improve drainage.
\nDirector Infrastructure and Property Ken Liddell\u00a0said the\u00a0project would\u00a0protect the local environment\u00a0and\u00a0aid in future management of\u00a0the\u00a037-hectare site.
\n\u201cCity of Newcastle is committed to\u00a0not only ensuring today\u2019s waste is managed\u00a0with the environment\u00a0front-of-mind, but that historic\u00a0sites like Astra Street at Shortland are not forgotten,\u201d\u00a0Mr Liddell\u00a0said.
\n\u201cEnvironmental management\u00a0and\u00a0monitoring\u00a0standards\u00a0have\u00a0come a long way\u00a0since 1995,\u00a0which is why we\u2019re investing in\u00a0upgrades that will protect the local environment well into the future.\u201d
\nThe proposed works will commence in early 2021 and include final capping and reprofiling of the site, and drainage improvements to aid in management of surface water and sediment runoff.
\nThe works are intended\u202fto maintain the local protected environment, increase and safeguard water quality of surrounding wetlands and aquatic ecosystems, increase biodiversity values, and promote\u202flong term native vegetation growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
