{"id":8091,"date":"2020-09-08T20:52:53","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T20:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=8091"},"modified":"2020-09-08T20:52:53","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T20:52:53","slug":"citys-new-flagship-arts-festival-unveiled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/09\/08\/citys-new-flagship-arts-festival-unveiled\/","title":{"rendered":"City\u2019s new flagship arts festival unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a theme of illumination and a tantalising \u201cWe Are New\u201d tagline, City of Newcastle has revealed the first details of its flagship arts festival \u2013 New Annual.<br \/>\nTo be held from 12-21 February 2021, the inaugural event will celebrate the depth of talent in Newcastle\u2019s thriving cultural and arts sector.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lz-bmiHq7hA?fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;version=3\" width=\"658\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said New Annual would become a dynamic addition to Newcastle\u2019s social calendar.<br \/>\n\u201cSupporting and delivering cultural and community programs, events and live music is key to progressing our vision of Newcastle as a smart, liveable and sustainable global city,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cA strong arts community feeds into a healthy economy, helps to revitalise and activate public spaces, creates vibrant night life, and spurs growth in cultural tourism.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is also a vehicle through which we can tell our city\u2019s story, share our histories and understand our identity.<br \/>\n\u201cThe name \u2018New Annual\u2019 itself represents our commitment to the city and its broader audience &#8211; that we will offer both surprise and continuity through this hallmark annual cultural event, with a uniquely Newcastle character that can be embraced by locals and visitors alike.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Dancers from Newcastle's Catapult Dance Choreography Hub perform during the launch of City of Newcastle's flagship arts festival - New Annual.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-s-new-flagship-arts-festival-unveiled\/New-Annual-3-web-shot.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"New-Annual-3-web-shot.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nNew Annual\u2019s 10-day program will include dance, live music, art displays, exhibitions, presentations, talks, and activation events.<br \/>\nDesigned with the flexibility to operate as a COVID Safe event depending on Public Health Orders, it will be held at a variety of locations with the ability to help keep crowd numbers dispersed, utilising City of Newcastle facilities, public spaces, private venues, community hubs and performance spaces.<br \/>\nCr Nelmes said New Annual will also allow City of Newcastle to continue its support for some of those worst affected by the global pandemic.<br \/>\n\u201cThe arts and cultural sectors\u202fwere\u202famong the earliest and hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cOrganisations such as Live Performance Australia, Music NSW and the National Association for the Visual Arts have valued the income loss for artists and entertainers across the country in the hundreds of millions of dollars.<br \/>\n\u201cPlanning for this event has allowed us to keep important funds and support flowing into the sector by engaging more than 40 local artists for the event so far, and this number will continue to grow as the festival approaches.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve also been fortunate to secure support for the event from the NSW Government, with two grants from the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.<br \/>\n\u201cI look forward to revealing more details about the New Annual at the official program launch next month.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a theme of illumination and a tantalising \u201cWe Are New\u201d tagline, City of Newcastle has revealed the first details of its flagship arts festival \u2013 New Annual.
