{"id":798,"date":"2018-11-25T21:36:42","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T21:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=798"},"modified":"2018-11-25T21:36:42","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T21:36:42","slug":"parade-marks-70th-anniversary-of-the-royal-australian-regiment-rar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/25\/parade-marks-70th-anniversary-of-the-royal-australian-regiment-rar\/","title":{"rendered":"Parade marks 70th anniversary of the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\">The 70th anniversary of the raising of the Australian Army\u2019s Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) was marked with a ceremonial parade at the Australian War Memorial today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The revered Queen\u2019s and recently updated Regimental Colours, featuring the 17 theatre and battle honours bestowed on the RAR, were on display with their respective Colour parties from the battalions of the regiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Major General Mark Kelly, AO, DSC (Retd), Colonel Commandant of the RAR said the regiment\u2019s birthday was a time to reflect on its rich history and achievements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe battalions of our regiment have provided the full-time infantry combat capability for the Australian Defence Force for the last 70 years,\u201d Major General Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0\u201cThis parade, and the display of the Colours, helps us to reflect on the sacrifice and valour of those who came before us, including the 684 members of the regiment who died on operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cWe remain committed to duty, ready to serve the Australian public as a key component of our modern and professional land force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cWe will continue to uphold the high standards set by infantry soldiers before us and look forward to continuing to serve our nation under the regimental motto of \u2018Duty First\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The RAR, originally consisting of three \u2018regular\u2019 infantry battalions \u2013 the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions \u2013 was raised in 1948 for service in Japan after World War Two. There are now seven RAR battalions, based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Townsville and Darwin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, MC (Retd); Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC; and Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Rick Burr, AO, DSC, MVO were all officers of the regiment. Seven Victoria Cross recipients, including the four most recently serving in Afghanistan, were at one time RAR soldiers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The RAR has deployed on many operations including the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Vietnam War, Somalia, Rwanda, East Timor, Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 70th anniversary of the raising of the Australian Army\u2019s Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) was marked with a ceremonial parade at the Australian War Memorial today.
