City of Newcastle is encouraging residents to register for its free\u00a0flash flood alert service after\u00a0July brought record-breaking rainfall\u00a0and severe East Coast Lows.
\nJuly\u2019s wet weather\u00a0saw residents flock to the service\u00a0to receive up-to-the-minute information,\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a041% increase in subscriptions\u00a0between 25 July\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the day\u00a0before an\u00a0East Coast Low dumped 107.6mm of rain at Nobbys weather station\u00a0in three days\u00a0\u2013 and mid-August. Subscriptions spiked from 3,337 to 4,711\u00a0across the eight zones.
\nThe\u00a0late July\u00a0weather event triggered moderate flood warnings to be issued across four zones, encompassing suburbs such as Wickham, Hamilton, New Lambton, Jesmond and\u00a0Stockton.\u00a0Around\u00a02,000 emails and text messages were sent to residents, as well as\u00a0474 pre-recorded messages to landlines.
\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali\u00a0Nelmes said it was the largest-scale alert distribution since the service was successfully trialled in Wallsend in 2017 and rolled out across the LGA in 2018.
\n\u201cDue to\u00a0our\u00a0city\u2019s topography, heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding in low-lying areas\u00a0extremely quickly,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.
\n\u201cThis is why our flash flood alert service is an important tool to help residents\u00a0avoid hazardous areas and remind them\u00a0to never walk or drive through fast-moving and unpredictable floodwaters, potentially preventing serious injury or\u00a0worse.
\n\u201cAnyone can register for free, but those who would most benefit include those who live, work, visit or own a business in Newcastle.\u201d
