{"id":7848,"date":"2020-08-25T07:55:53","date_gmt":"2020-08-25T07:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=7848"},"modified":"2020-08-25T07:55:53","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T07:55:53","slug":"housing-affordability-atop-city-of-newcastles-priorities-for-its-growing-population","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/08\/25\/housing-affordability-atop-city-of-newcastles-priorities-for-its-growing-population\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing affordability atop City of Newcastle&#039;s priorities for its growing population"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0new housing strategy will\u00a0address\u00a0a\u00a0forecast\u00a025%\u00a0increase in\u00a0population\u00a0over the next 20 years.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0draft Local Housing Strategy 2020, which is now on public exhibition, considers demographics,\u00a0housing\u00a0supply and demand, as well as land use opportunities and constraints to ensure the provision of affordable, accessible and sustainable housing\u00a0in the City.<br \/>\nThe latest City forecast shows\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0population is set to grow by 41,150\u00a0residents to\u00a0202,050 by\u00a02041\u00a0\u2013\u00a0stimulating\u00a0demand for some 19,450 new dwellings.<br \/>\nResearch has shown\u00a0that one in three\u00a0Newcastle\u00a0households have an annual income of less than $48,000 and a further 33\u00a0percent\u00a0suffer housing stress, which is when\u00a0more than 30\u00a0percent\u00a0of income is spent on housing.<br \/>\nWard 3 Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz, who\u00a0chairs\u00a0the\u00a0City\u2019s\u00a0Affordable\u00a0Living\u00a0Working\u00a0Party,\u00a0says home ownership is out of reach for many\u00a0people.<br \/>\n\u201cA mix of affordable and sustainable future housing is imperative to meet the diverse needs of our growing community,\u201d Cr Winney-Baartz said.<br \/>\n\u201cNewcastle\u2019s residential areas are experiencing growth and change.\u00a0It is vital that we provide a path to more affordable and diverse housing types, while complementing the city\u2019s heritage and character.\u201d<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle\u2019s housing strategy\u00a0aims to have\u00a0a\u00a0clear set of short, medium and long-term goals based on priorities, including the development of an affordable housing policy, housing diversification and sustainability.<br \/>\nTo ensure the goals translate into action,\u00a0the new\u00a0strategy has an\u00a0associated Implementation Plan that will be reviewed every 12 months as actions are completed and to reflect changes in Federal, State or Local priorities as well as resources and budgets.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0housing\u00a0strategy will be guided by the growth corridors and catalyst areas identified in the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan and the Newcastle LEP.<br \/>\nResidents can have their say until\u00a0Monday 21 September\u00a0via the City of Newcastle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/YourSay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0new housing strategy will\u00a0address\u00a0a\u00a0forecast\u00a025%\u00a0increase in\u00a0population\u00a0over the next 20 years.
