{"id":7729,"date":"2020-08-17T14:48:38","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T14:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=7729"},"modified":"2020-08-17T14:48:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T14:48:38","slug":"australia-post-service-cuts-kick-in-in-newcastle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/08\/17\/australia-post-service-cuts-kick-in-in-newcastle\/","title":{"rendered":"AUSTRALIA POST SERVICE CUTS KICK IN IN NEWCASTLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"headline\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"content\">\n<div id=\"intro\" class=\"intro\">\n<div class=\"content\">\nFrom today, Newcastle is being hit by the largest reduction to postal services in history, with deliveries reducing from five days a week to once every two business days.<br \/>\nFederal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon slammed the changes and accused the Government and Australia Post of \u201cusing the cover of the global pandemic and dodgy figures to slash services\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cIn March, the Government and Australia Post said the situation was dire, with letter volume dropping drastically during COVID. Since then, we\u2019ve learnt has revealed that not only is this not true, but that on the day the request for the cuts was made, letter volumes were actually four per cent\u00a0<strong><em>above<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0trend.<br \/>\n\u201cHow on earth can Australians trust the Morrison Government with our postal services when they can\u2019t even be trusted to tell the truth about their own figures?\u201d<br \/>\nMs Claydon said Federal Labor had tried to overturn the service cuts in the Federal Parliament.<br \/>\n\u201cLabor has been gravely concerned that these cuts to services would slash jobs and slow down business activity at a time when our economy is already on its knees,\u201d Ms Claydon said.<br \/>\n\u201cLabor put up a number of disallowance motions to get the cuts overturned but every time the Morrison Government used their numbers to ram them through.<br \/>\n\u201cSince then, the Government has capitulated to Labor\u2019s demands to save postie\u2019s jobs, but these damaging cuts to local services still stand.\u201d<br \/>\nMs Claydon said she was particularly concerned about older and vulnerable Novocastrians.<br \/>\n\u201cWe know that older people and those on lower incomes disproportionately rely on postal services,\u201d Ms Claydon said.<br \/>\n\u201cThese changes rip services away from the people who need them most.\u201d<br \/>\nMs Claydon was also highly sceptical about the Government\u2019s claim that the changes would be \u2018temporary\u2019.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Morrison Government is shielding its internal Australia Post review from Freedom of Information requests and refusing to release it to the Federal Parliament,\u201d Ms Claydon said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Federal Government has demonstrated just how determined it is to dodge scrutiny about what it\u2019s really doing.
