{"id":7536,"date":"2020-08-03T15:57:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T15:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=7536"},"modified":"2020-08-03T15:57:49","modified_gmt":"2020-08-03T15:57:49","slug":"preventing-and-responding-to-homelessness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/08\/03\/preventing-and-responding-to-homelessness\/","title":{"rendered":"PREVENTING AND RESPONDING TO HOMELESSNESS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 2,750 families and individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness are now living in safe and stable housing, thanks to the NSW Government\u2019s work to prevent and respond to homelessness during the pandemic.<br \/>\nMinister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said more than $70 million had gone towards new and expanded programs since March, to help support some of the most vulnerable people in the community.<br \/>\n\u201cWhether it\u2019s people who are sleeping on our streets, people couch surfing or victims of domestic violence \u2013 our Government is working tirelessly to bolster support and protect those most in need,\u201d Mr Ward said.<br \/>\n\u201cToday marks the start of Homelessness Week, and it is an opportunity to share the incredible stories of people who have overcome adversity and broken the cycle of homelessness.\u201d<br \/>\nMore than 1,900 individuals and families who were homeless or at risk of homelessness have moved into social housing since April, including more than 230 rough sleepers who had spent time in temporary accommodation, such as hotels.<br \/>\nAnother 850 individuals and families have received assistance to rent homes in the private market, including through programs like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.nsw.gov.au\/housing\/factsheets\/start-safely\">Start Safely<\/a>\u00a0for people escaping domestic violence, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.nsw.gov.au\/housing\/factsheets\/rent-choice-youth\">Rent Choice Youth<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe recently announced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcj.nsw.gov.au\/news-and-media\/media-releases\/securing-housing-for-the-homeless\"><em>Together Home<\/em><\/a>\u00a0project will significantly expand work to secure housing for rough sleepers, with some positive results achieved already.<br \/>\n\u201c<em>Together Home<\/em>\u00a0is providing people with a place to call home and the support they need to improve their health and wellbeing, and rebuild their life,\u201d Mr Ward said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis initiative will deliver life-changing outcomes for hundreds of people, and we are committed to working closely with our housing and homelessness providers to help people reach their full potential.\u201d<br \/>\nThe work undertaken during the pandemic aligns with the NSW Premier\u2019s Priority to halve street sleeping across the state by 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 2,750 families and individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness are now living in safe and stable housing, thanks to the NSW Government\u2019s work to prevent and respond to homelessness during the pandemic.
