{"id":7346,"date":"2020-07-21T00:51:43","date_gmt":"2020-07-21T00:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=7346"},"modified":"2020-07-21T00:51:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T00:51:43","slug":"50-year-vision-for-sydneys-open-space-and-parklands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/07\/21\/50-year-vision-for-sydneys-open-space-and-parklands\/","title":{"rendered":"50-YEAR VISION FOR SYDNEY\u2019S OPEN SPACE AND PARKLANDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new 50-Year Vision for\u00a0Greater\u00a0Sydney\u2019s\u00a0network of\u00a0parklands and green open spaces has been launched today\u00a0by the NSW Government,\u00a0heralded by\u00a0an initial\u00a0$10 million\u00a0investment to revitalise\u00a0one of the city\u2019s\u00a0forgotten\u00a0harbour-side\u00a0parks.<br \/>\nPlanning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said\u00a0the draft\u00a0Vision\u00a0\u2013 which is now open for public comment \u2013\u00a0puts\u00a0NSW on a path to the first-ever metropolitan-wide plan for\u00a0the\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0open spaces and parklands.<br \/>\n\u201cOur\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0parks\u00a0are one of our greatest assets and\u00a0belong to all of us; it\u2019s time for a clear,\u00a0single vision to protect, manage, enhance and expand\u00a0them\u00a0for generations to come,\u201d Mr Stokes said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how we need to change the way we look at our public spaces \u2013 not as parks in a city but rather as Sydney as a city within a park.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Vision will be championed by a new Greater Sydney Parklands (GSP) government agency that brings together the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust, Parramatta Park Trust, and Western Sydney Parklands Trusts, as well as the parklands of Callan Park and Fernhill Estate.\u00a0Michael Rose, Chairman of the Committee for Sydney,\u00a0has been appointed the Chair of\u00a0GSP\u00a0board.<br \/>\n\u201cIn the past,\u00a0the\u00a0individual parkland trusts have had a sole focus on the land within their boundaries.\u00a0Now we have\u00a0a once-in-a-generation opportunity to\u00a0look beyond those boundaries\u00a0to plan for our parklands and open spaces over the next 50 years as a connected and vital network that forms the backbone of\u00a0our city,\u201d Mr Stokes said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis\u00a0new\u00a0city-wide agency will work in partnership with communities and local councils\u00a0across Greater Sydney to champion the\u00a0new Vision and ensure\u00a0we\u2019re working\u00a0holistically\u00a0to expand and improve our open spaces and parklands.\u201d<br \/>\nCombined, the\u00a0agency\u00a0will\u00a0oversee\u00a0more than 6,000 hectares of parklands across Sydney, which host almost 40 million visits each year.<br \/>\nCallan Park in\u00a0Sydney\u2019s inner west\u00a0is the first park to\u00a0be identified through the GSP for urgent restorative work, with\u00a0$10 million in funding\u00a0allocated\u00a0to\u00a0enhance the connection with the waterfront and Bay Run.
