{"id":723,"date":"2018-11-21T13:16:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T13:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=723"},"modified":"2018-11-21T13:16:49","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T13:16:49","slug":"conditions-remain-favourable-for-australias-forestry-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/21\/conditions-remain-favourable-for-australias-forestry-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Conditions remain favourable for Australia\u2019s forestry sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_ctl01__ControlWrapper_RichHtmlField\" class=\"ms-rtestate-field\" aria-labelledby=\"ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_ctl01_label\">\nA report released by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) today highlighted continued growth in Australia\u2019s forestry sector thanks to favourable conditions in key markets, particularly housing and international trade.<br \/>\nABARES Executive Director, Dr Steve Hatfield-Dodds, said\u00a0<em>Australian forest and wood products statistics: March and June quarters 2018<\/em>, reported the fourth consecutive year of growth for the value added by the forestry and forest product manufacturing industries, to $8.8 billion.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are seeing strong domestic demand for wood products, with a 4.4 per cent increase in house commencements compared to the previous year, while the number of new other residential buildings\u2014such as units and townhouses\u2014also increased,\u201d Dr Hatfield-Dodds said.<br \/>\n\u201cDomestic demand for wood products remains at high levels. Following four years of consecutive growth, the estimated volume of logs harvested stabilised in 2017\u221218 at 32.9 million cubic metres.<br \/>\n\u201cExports of Australia\u2019s wood products were higher than ever in 2017\u201318, increasing for the fifth consecutive year to reach a record $3.6 billion, on the back of record high exports of woodchips, paper and paperboard, and roundwood.<br \/>\n\u201cOverseas demand for woodchips, sourced mainly from Australia\u2019s commercial hardwood plantations, remains strong with woodchips exports reaching $1.3 billion.<br \/>\n\u201cThe report finds the Chinese market accounted for the majority of total wood product export growth in 2017\u221218.<br \/>\n\u201cIn fact, 47 per cent of Australia\u2019s wood product exports went to China, a market now worth $1.7 billion.<br \/>\n\u201cAustralia\u2019s demand for overseas wood products in 2017\u221218 also increased, to $5.6 billion across all major wood product import categories, driven by growth in imports of wood-based panels and miscellaneous forest products.\u201d<br \/>\nFor a copy of the report visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/abares\/publications\">www.agriculture.gov.au\/abares\/publications<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A report released by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) today highlighted continued growth in Australia\u2019s forestry sector thanks to favourable conditions in key markets, particularly housing and international trade.
