There are 17 Goals addressing global challenges, from clean energy and climate action to human rights advocacy and gender equality.<br \/>\nThe City\u00a0has\u00a0signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Compass Housing, CIFAL \u2013 University of Newcastle,\u00a0Kumalie, Port of Newcastle, Hunter Water and Port Waratah Coal Services to grow and improve the implementation of the SDGs within the Hunter Region.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Sustainable-Development-Goals-MOU-signatories.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-of-Newcastle-makes-sustainability-a-priority\/Sustainable-Development-Goals-MOU-signatories.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Sustainable-Development-Goals-MOU-signatories.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>Representatives of the Hunter Region SDG Memorandum of Understanding signatories meet via Zoom.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nIn addition, City of Newcastle\u00a0has\u00a0joined the\u00a0Hunter Region SDG Taskforce, launched in May.\u00a0As a key member, the\u00a0City will host\u00a0a\u00a0webinar as part of a monthly program\u00a0on Goal 15 (Life on Land)\u00a0to coincide with\u00a0Biodiversity Month\u00a0in September.<br \/>\nDeputy Lord Mayor\u00a0Councillor Declan Clausen said City of Newcastle was committed to achieving each Goal by 2030, underpinned by their integration in the City\u2019s Annual Reporting in 2019 and Community Strategic Plan in 2018, and welcomed the opportunity for further collaboration across the region.<br \/>\n\u201cCity of Newcastle is already leading the local government sector on climate action, making great strides in the field over the past five years and becoming the first NSW Council to become powered by 100% renewable energy,\u201d Cr Clausen said.<br \/>\n\u201cOur 2025 Climate Action Plan, currently in development, will set our goals and priorities for the next five years to build on these achievements.<br \/>\n\u201cSigning the\u00a0MOU\u00a0and gaining a seat at the table\u00a0on the Hunter Region SDG Taskforce continues our transformation into a more sustainable city and\u00a0fosters\u00a0a strong,\u00a0collaborative\u00a0approach\u00a0to implementing the\u00a0Sustainable\u00a0Development Goals locally.\u201d<br \/>\nIn another coup, City of Newcastle has become the 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0city in the Oceania and Asia-Pacific Region to join the 2020 SDGs Cities Challenge.<br \/>\nFacilitated\u00a0by\u00a0Melbourne University\u2019s\u00a0Connected Cities Lab, the 2020 SDGs Cities Challenge is a 10-month action research project\u00a0designed to support participating cities in working towards implementing the targets and indicators.\u00a0Expertise\u00a0is\u00a0provided by local government, academia and business, including the\u00a0Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia and\u00a0the\u00a0Banksia Foundation, to identify the best approach for cities to deliver on the SDGs.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle joins Davao City (Philippines),\u00a0Alor\u00a0Gajah Municipal Council (Malaysia), City of Dehradun (India), Port Vila (Vanuatu), City of Honiara (Solomon Islands),\u00a0City of Melbourne, City of Warrnambool, City of Whitehorse, University of Melbourne Student Precinct, and City of Woollahra in\u00a0participating in\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.research.unimelb.edu.au\/connected-cities\/projects\/sdgs-cities-challenge\">Challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle\u00a0has joined forces with six other\u00a0leading\u00a0Hunter organisations to champion the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create a better, more sustainable future for all.
