City of Newcastle libraries\u00a0at Mayfield and New Lambton\u00a0will\u00a0reopen\u00a0in\u00a0July\u00a0following\u00a0the lifting of some\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0restrictions.
\nMayfield and New Lambton\u00a0branches\u00a0are\u00a0scheduled to\u00a0welcome\u00a0members\u00a0and visitors\u00a0back on site from July\u00a01 and 6 respectively.\u00a0Operating\u00a0hours will\u00a0also\u00a0be extended at\u00a0the Newcastle and Wallsend branches.
\nThe staged\u00a0reopening of libraries\u00a0has been designed to comply with\u00a0current\u00a0capacity limits\u00a0and prioritise the health and safety of staff and\u00a0the community\u00a0through a COVID-safe operating model.
\nThe\u00a0reopening of the\u00a0City\u2019s\u00a0remaining libraries\u00a0(Adamstown, Beresfield, Hamilton and Stockton)\u00a0is\u00a0currently being considered in terms of their ability to safely operate\u00a0given the\u00a0continuing\u00a0COVID-19 restrictions.\u00a0Lambton Library is\u00a0currently\u00a0undergoing a refresh\u00a0and\u00a0will\u00a0reopen once works are completed.
\n\u201cThe community\u00a0has\u00a0responded positively to the reopening of\u00a0our\u00a0City and Wallsend\u00a0branches\u00a0and we appreciate people\u2019s\u00a0patience as our team works through our COVID-19 safe plan\u00a0to reopen additional sites,\u201d Manager Libraries and Learning Suzie Gately said.
\n\u201cWe are\u00a0taking considered measures to ensure we meet Public Health Order requirements, which includes changes to our service delivery and preparing our spaces with additional safeguards.
\n\u201cThe next stage of service resumption will\u00a0see\u00a0operating hours extended and two additional branches reopened, allowing us to offer on-site\u00a0access\u00a0to the public\u00a0across a wider service area\u00a0including our Local History service at the City branch.
\n\u201cWe\u00a0are also\u00a0expanding\u00a0our \u2018Library Express\u2019 model to include access to study spaces and technology, and increasing visitation time to one hour from\u00a0the current\u00a0limit of 30 minutes.
\n\u201cWe will continue to offer our home library service for the most vulnerable and marginalised in our community\u00a0along with\u00a0continuing\u00a0the\u00a0Call and Collect service to all members\u00a0who may not want to come in and browse,\u00a0and\u00a0that will help\u00a0maximise the turnover of members at each site.
\n\u201cWhile we are looking forward to welcoming our members back into our various branches, we also expect that many will continue to make the most of our\u00a0expanded\u00a0online library\u00a0services,\u00a0which offer a convenient and contactless means of accessing a wide range of\u00a0e-books,\u00a0audio titles,\u00a0digital\u00a0magazines\u00a0and\u00a0newspapers,\u00a0as well as music and\u00a0movie-streaming platforms.\u201d
\nMore than\u00a06,000 members have visited the\u00a0Newcastle and Wallsend\u00a0libraries since\u00a0they were\u00a0reopened on 15 June.
\nEnhanced hygiene and cleaning procedures have been put in place at all library\u00a0service points,\u00a0including\u00a024-hour quarantining of all books\u00a0returned via the external\u00a0chutes.
