{"id":6996,"date":"2020-06-19T21:39:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T21:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=6996"},"modified":"2020-06-19T21:39:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T21:39:08","slug":"stocktons-long-term-coastal-plan-goes-to-council-after-strong-community-endorsement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/06\/19\/stocktons-long-term-coastal-plan-goes-to-council-after-strong-community-endorsement\/","title":{"rendered":"Stockton\u2019s long-term coastal plan goes to Council after strong community endorsement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle\u2019s long-term management\u00a0plan for Stockton\u2019s\u00a0erosion\u00a0hit\u00a0coastline will be\u00a0decided\u00a0at Tuesday night\u2019s\u00a0Council meeting\u00a0after receiving\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0support from the community through the public exhibition process.<br \/>\nCouncillors will vote\u00a0to adopt the\u00a0Stockton Coastal Management Program (CMP), which\u00a0proposes\u00a0a mix of\u00a0immediate and longer-term measures\u00a0to replenish\u00a0the heavily eroded\u00a0beach\u00a0and protect\u00a0Stockton\u2019s\u00a0coastal assets.<br \/>\nActions include an initial sand nourishment program\u00a0costing $4\u00a0million\u00a0from land-based or other permissible\u00a0sources, as well as essential work to address the imminent risk to\u00a0community assets and\u00a0private property including minimal extensions\u00a0of the existing buried seawalls.<br \/>\nA mass\u00a0offshore\u00a0marine sand nourishment campaign of 2.4 million cubic metres,\u00a0followed by ongoing\u00a010-year\u00a0maintenance would provide\u00a0the necessary protection for Stockton. The\u00a0pathway\u00a0for the\u00a0mass nourishment\u00a0strategy\u00a0is through\u00a0the Deputy Premier\u2019s Stockton Taskforce,\u00a0that is\u00a0accessing\u00a0the\u00a0required volume of sand from\u00a0offshore locations, funding sources and all relevant approval processes.<br \/>\nCommunity and agency stakeholders have\u00a0backed\u00a0the\u00a0proposed measures,\u00a0with 73\u00a0per cent of respondents\u00a0indicating\u00a0their support\u00a0during the recent public exhibition period.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said\u00a0feedback provided during this\u00a0process has been used to refine the\u00a0final draft of the CMP, which will be tabled at Tuesday\u2019s meeting.<br \/>\n\u201cWe know how important it\u00a0is to the community that\u00a0we move forward with a plan that achieves the best outcome\u00a0for\u00a0Stockton\u2019s\u00a0coastline,\u201d\u00a0the Lord Mayor\u00a0said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe response we received during the public exhibition period\u00a0was fantastic, with\u00a0more than 3,000 views of our dedicated web page and\u00a0436\u00a0downloads of the draft CMP document, not to mention\u00a018,700 views of\u00a0videos informing\u00a0the community and encouraging submissions.<br \/>\n\u201cThis\u00a0extensive\u00a0engagement\u00a0has allowed us to carefully consider the needs of the community\u00a0and industry\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0while\u00a0preparing the\u00a0final\u00a0version of the\u00a0Stockton Coastal Management Program.\u201d<br \/>\nIf approved, the Stockton CMP will\u00a0be submitted to the NSW State Government for certification review.<br \/>\nStockton Community Liaison Group (CLG) Chair Barbara Whitcher said the\u00a0group\u00a0was keen to see the process continue\u00a0to move forward.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter extensive consultation with City of Newcastle, including 22 meetings, the Stockton Community Liaison Group is pleased to see that a coastal management plan, which has the broad support of the community, will go to Council,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe majority in our community and Council\u00a0are in agreement\u00a0about the main features of the program to finally address erosion and protect our coastline.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are hopeful that all Councillors will endorse the plan at Tuesday night\u2019s Council meeting to allow the process to continue moving forward with the NSW Government.\u201d<br \/>\nAnother key step towards addressing Stockton\u2019s\u00a0long-term\u00a0erosion issues was also taken this week, with the first meeting of the\u00a0Deputy Premier\u2019s\u00a0Taskforce being held on Tuesday.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0City of Newcastle will play a key role in the taskforce, which is being chaired by\u00a0NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro and includes\u00a0the Lord Mayor,\u00a0the State Member for Newcastle and representatives from the\u00a0Stockton community,\u00a0Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Department of Regional NSW, Port of Newcastle\u00a0and the\u00a0NSW Coastal Council.<br \/>\nThe meeting was\u00a0hailed by the Deputy Premier as \u201cvery successful\u201d, with the Taskforce committed to meeting at least four times a year with the common goal of\u00a0getting sand onto Stockton Beach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle\u2019s long-term management\u00a0plan for Stockton\u2019s\u00a0erosion\u00a0hit\u00a0coastline will be\u00a0decided\u00a0at Tuesday night\u2019s\u00a0Council meeting\u00a0after receiving\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0support from the community through the public exhibition process.
