{"id":6842,"date":"2020-06-05T02:58:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T02:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=6842"},"modified":"2020-06-05T02:58:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T02:58:12","slug":"city-to-prioritise-upgrades-to-newcastle-ocean-baths-pools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/06\/05\/city-to-prioritise-upgrades-to-newcastle-ocean-baths-pools\/","title":{"rendered":"City to prioritise upgrades to Newcastle Ocean Baths&#039; pools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle will begin upgrading Newcastle Ocean Baths\u00a0from early next year to improve the safety and accessibility of its two pools while community consultation continues on future improvements to the site\u2019s historic pavilions.<br \/>\nRemediation\u00a0of\u00a0the 1920s-era facility\u2019s swimming pools, promenades and\u00a0pump house are among the first stage works presented to the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group\u00a0(CRG) this week.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Large-pool-NOB-inside.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-to-prioritise-upgrades-to\/Large-pool-NOB-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Large-pool-NOB-inside.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cNewcastle Ocean Baths is treasured by our community and we know how important it is to get on with the upgrades to the pools while at the same time ensuring the community has a role in co-designing improvements to the iconic pavilions,\u201d Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re prioritising a refurbishment of the pools and their surrounds to improve safety and accessibility while ensuring adequate time to work with the community on a plan for the pavilion that respects the heritage and integrity of the site.<br \/>\n\u201cThe City will work with the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group over the coming year to develop concept designs for the future pavilion upgrades, which will then be available for\u00a0further\u00a0community feedback.\u201d<br \/>\nThe CRG was\u00a0formed to\u00a0help plan\u00a0the renewal\u00a0through discussions and co-design workshops.<br \/>\nConcept designs for the upcoming upgrade to the pavilions and surrounds will be developed with CRG input and be presented to the broader community for comment prior to final concept design being placed on public exhibition.<br \/>\nThe elected Council will then consider the plan before the project progresses to detailed design.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Large-pool-NOB2-inside.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-to-prioritise-upgrades-to\/Large-pool-NOB2-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Large-pool-NOB2-inside.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nPreliminary engagement was\u00a0carried out\u00a0for the future use of Newcastle Ocean Baths from November 2019 to March 2020 to\u00a0capture the community\u2019s wishes.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0engagement\u00a0activities\u00a0were promoted\u00a0right across Newcastle\u00a0to ensure the broadest number of people had a chance to comment, and included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An online ideas wall that drew 840\u00a0comments\u00a0on Newcastle Ocean Baths<\/li>\n<li>898 telephone surveys<\/li>\n<li>129\u00a0intercept face-to-face surveys\u00a0for Newcastle Ocean Baths at locations across the LGA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Results included support for improving shade and access, maintaining the aesthetic of the existing site and enhancing the kiosk offering.
