{"id":6591,"date":"2020-05-19T09:22:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T09:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=6591"},"modified":"2020-05-19T09:22:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T09:22:03","slug":"make-our-cities-rivers-swimmable-again-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/05\/19\/make-our-cities-rivers-swimmable-again-greens\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Our Cities\u2019 Rivers Swimmable Again: Greens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Greens have pledged to make Australia\u2019s rivers and lakes swimmable again, under their\u00a0Covid-19 Economic\u00a0Recovery plan,\u00a0that\u2019s good for jobs, the economy and the environment.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0Swimmable Lakes and Rivers\u00a0Pledge would see iconic rivers and lakes across the country restored and clean enough to swim in within the next decade.<br \/>\nIt is one of the job-rich projects under the Greens Next Gen Guarantee which would see young people guaranteed a job and secure income to restart the economy and build a better normal after Covid-19.<br \/>\nGreens South Australian Senator and Spokesperson for Environment and Water Sarah Hanson-Young said:<br \/>\n\u201cA green jobs recovery is desperately needed to stem the flow of jobs\u00a0across the country, as our young people in particular stare down the barrel of years of unemployment.<br \/>\n\u201cFrom the bushfires to yearning to reconnect with nature after the Covid lockdown, Australian\u2019s are concerned about our environment more than ever before.<br \/>\n\u201cMaking the rivers like the Adelaide\u2019s Torrens, Melbourne\u2019s Yarra, Perth\u2019s Swan and even Canberra\u2019s Lake Burley Griffin, clean enough to swim in, is a wonderful investment in our environment and the community.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Greens plan for getting young people into jobs that rehabilitate bushfire devastated areas, protect native wildlife and restore our iconic rivers is a win-win. It\u2019s good for the economy, it tackles youth unemployment and its good for our environment.<br \/>\n\u201cSwimmable rivers and lakes in our cities\u00a0isn\u2019t just good for jobs, it\u2019s great for Aussies who want to cool off as we experience more hot days, for our social fabric as we come back together after the pandemic and of course for the environment.<br \/>\n\u201cMany of our urban rivers used to be swimmable, and remain beautiful spots to picnic or exercise around,\u00a0why shouldn\u2019t\u00a0they\u00a0be returned to\u00a0their\u00a0former glory of being a spot for a dip as well?<br \/>\n\u201cWe are facing a devastatingly high\u00a0unemployment\u00a0rate across\u00a0the country and our young people have been hit the hardest. Jobs in our environment shouldn\u2019t just be in regional areas, we need urban jobs in nature too.<br \/>\n\u201cTogether with a Habitat Taskforce to restore bushfire devastated areas and rehabilitate the environment and our wildlife, the Greens&#8217; plan to get young people into jobs is a win-win.
