{"id":6530,"date":"2020-05-15T01:18:48","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T01:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=6530"},"modified":"2020-05-15T01:18:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T01:18:48","slug":"tenders-called-to-build-new-bathers-way-leg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/05\/15\/tenders-called-to-build-new-bathers-way-leg\/","title":{"rendered":"Tenders called to build new Bathers Way leg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contracts to build\u00a0the latest\u00a0stretch\u00a0of\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0landmark\u00a0Bathers Way Coastal Pathway and\u00a0a\u00a0drawcard\u00a0skating\u00a0facility\u00a0at\u00a0South Newcastle Beach\u00a0will be open to tender\u00a0from\u00a0Tuesday.<br \/>\nSite preparation work\u00a0and cliff\u00a0stabilisation\u00a0will\u00a0soon\u00a0begin,\u00a0before\u00a0separate contracts are\u00a0awarded\u00a0in July\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0latest instalment\u00a0of the\u00a0Bathers Way\u2019s\u00a0signature\u00a0broadened\u00a0pathway\u00a0and\u00a0an\u00a0adjoining\u00a0skate\u00a0park and bowl.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression-inside1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Tenders-called-to-build-new-Bathers-Way-section\/Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression-inside1.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression-inside1.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe\u00a0$11.7 million\u00a0project, which will\u00a0begin in August and\u00a0take around two years to complete, will re-activate\u00a0South Newcastle Beach\u00a0with a kiosk, new public amenities, landscaping, artwork, shade and seating, exercise equipment and viewing areas.<br \/>\n\u201cConstruction companies\u00a0are now invited\u00a0to bid for these two contracts to transform a long-dormant part of Newcastle\u2019s coastline,\u201d Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cBy renewing\u00a0the site\u2019s\u00a0infrastructure and\u00a0building\u00a0new facilities,\u00a0we hope to revive\u00a0South Newcastle Beach\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0vibrant and attractive place to visit.<br \/>\n\u201cCompleted sections of the Bathers Way have\u00a0prompted\u00a050 per cent\u00a0usage\u00a0increases, with Merewether one of the busiest due to\u00a0its\u00a0additional facilities, and\u00a0we expect\u00a0to see similar impetus from this revitalisation project.<br \/>\n\u201cIncreased foot and wheel-based traffic will, in turn, increase surveillance and reduce anti-social behaviour\u00a0in a wider boost for businesses in Newcastle East.\u201d<br \/>\nPart of The Newcastle Beach Community Infrastructure Project, the\u00a0upcoming works\u00a0will better connect\u00a0King Edward Park and Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club\u00a0before the\u00a0final Bathers\u00a0Way sections,\u00a0through\u00a0the park\u00a0and along Memorial Drive,\u00a0are\u00a0delivered.<br \/>\nThe project is partially funded through the State Government\u2019s Restart NSW Fund and has been guided by the Bathers Way Community Reference Group (CRG).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression2-inside.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Tenders-called-to-build-new-Bathers-Way-section\/Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression2-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Bathers-Way-Artist-Impression2-inside.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nCommunity feedback\u00a0in 2018\u00a0on the original concept plan, which\u00a0had a\u00a0skate bowl\u00a0extending\u00a0onto the\u00a0beach,\u00a0prompted\u00a0modifications\u00a0that garnered overwhelming support\u00a0in further community engagement\u00a0last year.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic area that will be activated by a myriad of user groups and individuals,\u201d Bathers Way CRG\u2019s Skate Community Representative John Bogaerts said. \u201cThe area has been dormant for some time so this upgrade will mean it meets the community\u2019s needs and will complement the rest of the existing Bathers Way.\u201d<br \/>\nWhile a separate tender and contract\u00a0will be awarded\u00a0for the skatepark construction\u00a0in\u00a0parallel to the main Bathers Way tender, the former will be novated under the\u00a0latter\u00a0when both are awarded.<br \/>\nIn preparation, minor construction work will commence in June, including\u00a0drainage,\u00a0maintenance of the cliff face and preparations\u00a0to\u00a0extend\u00a0the existing rock-catch fence.<br \/>\nTender submissions\u00a0can be made from Tuesday via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenderlink.com\/newcastle\/\">https:\/\/www.tenderlink.com\/newcastle\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contracts to build\u00a0the latest\u00a0stretch\u00a0of\u00a0Newcastle\u2019s\u00a0landmark\u00a0Bathers Way Coastal Pathway and\u00a0a\u00a0drawcard\u00a0skating\u00a0facility\u00a0at\u00a0South Newcastle Beach\u00a0will be open to tender\u00a0from\u00a0Tuesday.
