Sixty-one years\u00a0later,\u00a0he\u00a0is\u00a0homeward bound.<br \/>\nNewcastle Art Gallery is staging the first major survey of work by\u00a0Tom\u00a0Gleghorn\u00a0OAM,\u00a0regarded\u00a0as\u00a0one of Australia\u2019s finest and influential abstract expressionists.<br \/>\n<em>HOMEWARD BOUND: the art and life of Tom\u00a0Gleghorn\u00a0<\/em>will feature paintings and drawings from Newcastle\u2019s collection, including the new major acquisition\u00a0<em>Landscape Altar \u2013 MacDonnell Ranges<\/em> \u00a01986, as well as works of art on loan from private and public collections.<br \/>\nDrawn from across the artist\u2019s extraordinary career of more than 70 years, the exhibition will also feature a new documentary created by journalist and author Scott Bevan specially for the exhibition.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are deeply honoured to be staging the first major survey of\u00a0Gleghorn\u2019s\u00a0work,\u201d Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton said.<br \/>\n\u201cHis ability to evoke a strong sense of immersion within his compositions, his connection to the Australian landscape, as well as his mastery of colour and form,\u00a0is strongly represented within this exhibition.<br \/>\n\u201cAs a highly respected senior artist,\u00a0Gleghorn\u00a0has influenced the Australian artistic community through\u00a0not only his own practice, but his commitment to education. This survey is long overdue.\u201d<br \/>\nNow\u00a0aged\u00a0in his mid-nineties,\u00a0Gleghorn\u00a0has maintained a sense of kinship with Newcastle and Lake Macquarie throughout his life.<br \/>\nBorn in England in 1925,\u00a0he\u00a0migrated to Australia with his family at the age of two.
