organisations\u00a0supporting\u00a0vulnerable\u00a0Novocastrians\u00a0have shared\u00a0in\u00a0$150,000\u00a0of\u00a0Rapid\u00a0Response\u00a0Grants\u00a0from\u00a0City of Newcastle\u00a0to overcome challenges posed by\u00a0COVID-19.<br \/>\nPayments made promptly under the City\u2019s Community and Economic Development Resilience Package are already helping charities prepare meals and care packages for the needy and supply them through newly introduced delivery services.<br \/>\nFunds\u00a0will also\u00a0be\u00a0used to buy\u00a0IT equipment\u00a0for\u00a0disadvantaged\u00a0youth\u00a0to\u00a0continue their\u00a0education\u00a0during\u00a0social\u00a0isolation and\u00a0help\u00a0victims of domestic violence\u00a0access\u00a0online counselling.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0round\u00a0of\u00a0support\u00a0had been rolled out in little more than a week after the City announced a\u00a0twin\u00a0grants program to support non-government organisations, not for profits and other charitable service providers.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u00a0rapid response funding\u00a0has ensured\u00a0the\u00a0continuity of food supply\u00a0to meet\u00a0a spike in local demand,\u201d\u00a0the Lord Mayor\u00a0said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was critical we responded quickly\u00a0to help organisations implement\u00a0the\u00a0changes they have had\u00a0to make\u00a0to operate safely under current\u00a0social distancing and home isolation\u00a0restrictions.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are delighted to help the\u00a0food charity\u00a0sector as it adjusts to new ways of\u00a0working\u00a0and\u00a0vulnerable members\u00a0of the community adapt\u00a0to\u00a0access\u00a0online and digital\u00a0help, whether through\u00a0computer\u00a0tablets for disadvantaged kids\u00a0living in\u00a0refuges\u00a0or online counselling for victims of domestic violence.\u201d<br \/>\nThe eight\u00a0recipient\u00a0charities\u00a0include:<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozharvest.org\/\" \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.awabakal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awabakal<\/a><br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A local women\u2019s and children\u2019s refuge<br \/>\nBaptistCare\u00a0HopeStreet\u2019s\u00a0Craig\u00a0Budden\u00a0said\u00a0their\u00a0$25,000\u00a0grant\u00a0from the City\u00a0would help provide food support and material assistance\u00a0to meet\u00a0a huge increase in\u00a0demand\u00a0at\u00a0the organisation\u2019s\u00a0Wallsend and Mayfield\u00a0centres.<br \/>\n\u201cThe extra funding will mean we are able to provide more emergency relief care-packs, Woolworths and Coles vouchers, hand sanitiser, cleaning products and other emergency relief items like petrol, sleeping bags and pharmacy products, as well as more takeaway food through our outreach van,\u201d\u00a0Budden,\u00a0Manager of the Wallsend Centre, said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe grant will also help fund the\u00a0HopeStreet\u00a0food delivery service that we have started to ensure those who\u00a0are\u00a0experiencing food insecurity but\u00a0are\u00a0self-isolating or quarantining can\u00a0still receive food support.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" of\u00a0community\u00a0funding\u00a0totalling\u00a0$550,000\u00a0is\u00a0also being offered under\u00a0the City\u2019s\u00a0Community and Economic Development Resilience Package.<br \/>\nThe Boost our\u00a0City\u00a0Community Grants\u00a0of up to $30,000\u00a0will\u00a0help organisations\u00a0directly support community health and wellbeing during the\u00a0coronavirus\u00a0crisis.<br \/>\n\u201cThese additional grants\u00a0are\u00a0aimed at supporting existing service providers to cope with increased urgency and demand\u00a0in the\u00a0provision of support services,\u00a0such as food supply,\u00a0supported living\u00a0and\u00a0community transport,\u00a0to name a few,\u201d the Lord Mayor\u00a0added.<br \/>\n\u201cWhether it\u2019s for\u00a0someone with complex health needs but limited access to technology\u00a0to\u00a0continue\u00a0getting that\u00a0vital care,\u00a0or\u00a0someone\u00a0who has lost their job\u00a0and\u00a0is\u00a0seeking\u00a0help\u00a0for the first
