{"id":6096,"date":"2020-04-20T08:56:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=6096"},"modified":"2020-04-20T08:56:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:56:02","slug":"stronger-protection-for-sydneys-water-catchment-following-extensive-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/04\/20\/stronger-protection-for-sydneys-water-catchment-following-extensive-review\/","title":{"rendered":"STRONGER PROTECTION FOR SYDNEY\u2019S WATER CATCHMENT FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE REVIEW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Better protections, stronger assessment and more environmental offsets will ensure Sydney\u2019s drinking water supply is safeguarded, following an extensive review by an independent expert panel.<br \/>\nPlanning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the NSW Government had accepted all 50 recommendations of the expert panel led by the office of the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer.<br \/>\n\u201cWe want to ensure we have every measure in place to protect Sydney\u2019s water supply for generations to come,\u201d Mr Stokes said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve accepted all of the recommendations from the panel and have established an interagency taskforce to implement a detailed action plan throughout this year.<br \/>\n\u201cThese actions will improve our existing comprehensive assessment and monitoring of underground coal mining while providing certainty for both Sydney\u2019s water supply and thousands of jobs across NSW \u2013 particularly 5,000 workers in the Illawarra.\u201d<br \/>\nThe action plan includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring there is a net gain for the metropolitan water supply by requiring more offsetting from mining companies;<\/li>\n<li>Establishing a new independent expert panel to advise on future mining applications in the catchment;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening surface and groundwater monitoring;<\/li>\n<li>Improving access to and transparency of environmental data;<\/li>\n<li>Adopting a more stringent approach to the assessment and conditioning of future mining proposals to minimise subsidence impacts;<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing and updating current and potential future water losses from mining in line with the best available science;<\/li>\n<li>Introducing a licensing regime to properly account for any water losses; and<\/li>\n<li>Undertaking further research into mine closure planning to reduce potential long-term impacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Independent Expert Panel for Mining in the Catchment\u2019s final report is available at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefscientist.nsw.gov.au\/reports\/independent-expert-panel-for-mining-in-the-catchment\">https:\/\/www.chiefscientist.nsw.gov.au\/reports\/independent-expert-panel-for-mining-in-the-catchment<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Better protections, stronger assessment and more environmental offsets will ensure Sydney\u2019s drinking water supply is safeguarded, following an extensive review by an independent expert panel.
