{"id":60,"date":"2018-10-11T14:20:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T14:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=60"},"modified":"2018-10-11T14:20:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T14:20:10","slug":"representation-of-the-bridging-rebuilding-of-cultures-wins-kilgour-prize-peoples-choice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/10\/11\/representation-of-the-bridging-rebuilding-of-cultures-wins-kilgour-prize-peoples-choice\/","title":{"rendered":"Representation of &#039;the bridging &amp; rebuilding of cultures&#039; wins Kilgour Prize People&#039;s Choice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Artist Lori Pensini\u2019s depiction of her cousins, Tyler and Georgia, tells a broader story of race relations in early Australia and was painted following her Western Australian family&#8217;s \u201crecent discovery of indigenous lineage\u201d.<br \/>\nThe intimate and loving portrait of\u00a0the girls in matching striped dresses has been voted the People&#8217;s Choice in Newcastle Art Gallery&#8217;s KILGOUR PRIZE 2018 exhibition.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Lori-Pensini-with-artwork-inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Representation-of-the-bridging-rebuilding-of-cu\/Lori-Pensini-with-artwork-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Lori-Pensini-with-artwork-inside.jpg\" \/><sup>Pensini with the her work<\/sup>\u00a0<sup><em><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: small;\">Pride and Prejudice<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 2018 oil on canvas 101 x 121 cm, the People&#8217;s Choice in the 2018 Kilgour Prize.<\/span><\/sup><br \/>\nThe &#8216;social &amp; political prejudices of the colonial era&#8217; &#8211; acknowledges the artist&#8217;s statement &#8211; saw her ancestors conceal two sons\u2019 marriages to local Noongar women, denying latter generations all knowledge of the unions that ultimately spawned Pensini\u2019s contrasting subjects.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pensini-Lori_prideandprejudice-inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Representation-of-the-bridging-rebuilding-of-cu\/Pensini-Lori_prideandprejudice-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Pensini-Lori_prideandprejudice-inside.jpg\" \/><sup><strong>Lori PENSINI<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>\u00a0 2018 oil on canvas 101 x 121 cm<\/sup><br \/>\nNewcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton hailed the public&#8217;s decision, the skill Pensini employed to convey intimacy, and context and broader social narrative of the work.<br \/>\n\u201cI&#8217;m not surprised that visitors have responded so favourably to this work,\u201d Morton said.<br \/>\n&#8220;It becomes apparent when viewing this intimate portrait that the artist has a strong connection to the subjects, and her deft skill in rendering their striped dresses further unifies the strong bond between the cousins.&#8221;<br \/>\nOne in 10 of voters in the People\u2019s Choice award selected Pensini&#8217;s painting and a number of them proffered positive critiques, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8216;Conveys such an enormous history so simply in its subjects&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;I loved the women&#8217;s faces. A feeling of contentment and love between each other. Beautiful piece of art that assume two persons seem one.&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;To me this painting conveys a serenity between two people. Clearly these girls share a lot of caring, peace and understanding.
