Grit was manufactured in Britain and came to Australia to help raise funds during the First World War . It is currently on display in Anzac Hall.<br \/>\nThrough the use of 360-degree digital video and virtual reality technology, users can view and explore Grit, inside and out. Visitors can click on pop-up icons to see archival photos, watch videos, hear audio recordings, and uncover the stories behind the Mark IV tank \u2013 a machine that played an important role in our military history.<br \/>\nMemorial Director Dr Brendan Nelson said the power of these digital experiences is in the stories they enable us to tell.<br \/>\n\u201cHere at the Australian War Memorial, surrounded as we are by artefacts and relics, our responsibility is to tell the stories of the men and women that stand behind the equipment we proudly display,\u201d said Dr Nelson.<br \/>\n\u201cThis project ensures Australians in remote parts of the country who can\u2019t physically visit us at the Memorial can now, whether on a portable device or a desktop device, inspect these large technology objects and have a tank brought to life before their very eyes.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"section section--main image-container\">\n<div class=\"container container--thin\">\n<figure class=\"figure\">\n<div class=\"figure__cover\"><button class=\"action-button action-button--figure figure__action-button jsContentGalleryOpenButton\" title=\"Open gallery\" data-gallery=\"0\"><\/button><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure__media\" src=\"https:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/large\/public\/images\/MKIV_users02.jpg?itok=aEAggjpt\" alt=\"phone image\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"figure__caption\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\nMK IV tank experience on a smart phone.\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--free-text paragraph--view-mode--default section section--main\">\n<div class=\"container container--thin\">\n<div class=\"entry-content \">\nThe series of immersive digital experiences, called\u00a0<em>On closer inspection<\/em><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>is being developed by the Australian War Memorial in partnership with Leidos Australia. Two versions have been created to make the experience accessible to as many Australians at possible: one using React 360 VR technology, and one for YouTube 360.<br \/>\nChief Executive of Leidos Australia Christine Zeitz said the development of digital interactive experiences aligns with the company\u2019s vision.<br \/>\n\u201cThis digital project provides another channel where people can access the history and the stories of Australians at war,\u201d said Ms Zeitz.<br \/>\n\u201cPartnering with the Memorial to ensure that our history is shared with everyone, especially younger generations, is something Leidos and I are passionate about.\u201d<br \/>\nOver the next two years the Memorial will deliver four more 360-degree immersive experiences as part of\u00a0<em>On Closer Inspection<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Avro Lancaster B1 \u2018\u2018G for George\u201d from the Second World War<\/li>\n<li>HMAS\u00a0<em>Sydney<\/em>\u00a0(IV), deployed in the First Gulf War<\/li>\n<li>A Lockheed Hudson bomber\u00a0from the Second World War<\/li>\n<li>A Bushmaster Australian Army Protected Mobility Vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"section section--main\">\n<div class=\"container container--narrow\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New interactive digital experience lets users inspect a First World War tank inside and out Today the Australian War Memorial launched the first in a new series of immersive digital experiences that will allow users to explore the workings of large technology objects in the Memorial\u2019s collection.
