This is\u202fwhy we\u202fprioritised this\u202f$3.3\u202fmillion project\u202fin what\u202fis a long term, generational\u202fchange project in Wallsend.<br \/>\n\u201cThis\u00a0project\u00a0saw the demolition of the\u202fformer\u202fsmaller and lower\u202fstructure which was built in 1930. In its place\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a026.6-metre-long\u00a0two-span, two-lane concrete plank road bridge, allowing\u202fmore water to\u202fflow through Hunter Water\u2019s drain\u202fduring\u202fstorm events.<br \/>\n\u201cI thank the community for their patience and cooperation during the construction of the new bridge\u00a0and am pleased\u00a0the City is making progress in improving\u00a0the suburbs resilience to flooding.\u201d<br \/>\nReplacing Tyrrell Street Bridge forms part of the Ironbark Creek Flood Mitigation Plan, which proposes another two bridges at Boscawen Street and Nelson Street be replaced, increasing the flow capacity at the Cowper Street Bridge, and planning for how Hunter Water\u2019s channel can be widened to allow better water flow during heavy rainfall.<br \/>\nWard Four Councillor Jason Dunn said the project was\u00a0also\u00a0the starting point of a larger program of work to benefit residents, businesses, property owners and visitors to the suburb.<br \/>\n\u201cA long-term vision\u202ffor the\u202frenewal\u202fof the\u202fWallsend\u202flocal\u202fcentre is\u202fstarting to take place\u202ffollowing the adoption of the\u202fWallsend Local Centre Public Domain and Traffic Plan,\u201d Cr Dunn said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u202fplan aims to increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic as well as improve amenity, accessibility and connectivity for the community.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ll\u202fbe having a conversation with the community about how\u202fthe plan takes shape and what\u202fthe ideal future for Wallsend looks\u00a0like\u202fincluding\u202fheritage\u202fpreservation,\u202fmore\u202fseating and shade,\u202fgreener streets\u00a0and\u202fpublic access to technology like Wi-Fi.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ll\u202falso\u202fbe\u202frestoring aging infrastructure including roads, footpaths, lighting and drainage\u202fthroughout the town centre.<br \/>\n\u201cWallsend\u2019s flood mitigation project\u202fand\u202fpublic\u202fdomain\u202fplan\u202fform one long term vision\u202fto\u202fallow the\u202ftown centre to\u202fthrive\u202fas the population grows in our western suburb.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Construction is complete on the new $3.3 million Tyrrell Street Bridge, marking an important milestone in addressing flooding in Wallsend.
