{"id":557,"date":"2018-11-15T06:17:55","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T06:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=557"},"modified":"2018-11-15T06:17:55","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T06:17:55","slug":"nsw-police-to-retain-newcastle-airport-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/15\/nsw-police-to-retain-newcastle-airport-role\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW Police to retain Newcastle Airport role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New South Wales Police will retain policing operation duties when Newcastle Airport begins international operations later this month.<br \/>\nFrom Thursday 22 November 2018, Newcastle Airport Pty Ltd (NAPL) will introduce Virgin Australia flights between Australia and New Zealand three days a week.<br \/>\nThe 13-week arrangement is due to continue until Sunday 17 February 2019.<br \/>\nThe Port Stephens-Hunter Police District has been working closely with the airport, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Australian Border Force (ABF) to prepare for the changes.<br \/>\nDespite the introduction of international flights, Port Stephens-Hunter Commander, Detective Superintendent Craig Jackson, said the responsibility for policing will remain with NSW Police.<br \/>\n\u201cThe airport\u2019s classification has moved from category three to category two, but it\u2019s not deemed a \u201cdesignated\u201d facility, so there\u2019s no requirement for the Australian Federal Police to staff the airport,\u201d Det. Supt Jackson said.<br \/>\n\u201cHowever, the AFP has started training local NSW officers to deal with international crime detection and the prosecution of offences under state and federal legislation,\u201d he added.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are new areas of policing for us to consider, relating to importation, immigration and aviation offences, as well as the airport\u2019s own procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New South Wales Police will retain policing operation duties when Newcastle Airport begins international operations later this month.
