{"id":5389,"date":"2020-03-06T21:52:26","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T21:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5389"},"modified":"2020-03-06T21:52:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T21:52:26","slug":"aboriginal-ingenuity-on-exhibition-at-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/03\/06\/aboriginal-ingenuity-on-exhibition-at-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal ingenuity on exhibition at Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The skills, culture and adaptability of First Nations people will be showcased at Newcastle Museum when the improvisational genius of the famous\u00a0<i>Bush Mechanics<\/i>\u00a0is complemented by a display of locally made possum skin cloaks and weaving.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The hit ABC documentary series\u00a0<i>Bush Mechanics<\/i>, which combined the mechanical resourcefulness of Central Australia\u2019s Walpiri men with their humour and music, was a TV phenomenon in 2001.\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four episodes\u00a0<\/span>in which they replaced car parts with tree boughs and cleverly used other bush resources, such as mulga, spinifex and sand, as tools and spare parts,<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0were watched by more than 3 million viewers.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">An EH Holden they cut the roof off to use as a makeshift trailer, a Ford Fairlane adorned in a water-dreaming painting and a driver-simulator cobbled from random machinery and a computer monitor, feature among their handiwork in the\u00a0<i>Bush Mechanics<\/i>\u00a0exhibition from the National Motor Museum.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Roofless-Holden-inside.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Aboriginal-ingenuity-on-exhibition\/Roofless-Holden-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Roofless-Holden-inside.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>The old Holden lopped by the Bush Mechanics.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nSpecially commissioned art, displays showing their clever \u201cnyurulypa\u201d (good bush tricks) and an augmented reality app that explains the Ford Fairlane painting, feature among the exhibition\u2019s interactive components.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe City of Newcastle invests around $15 million in delivering cultural facilities in our city year in year out, and our Newcastle Museum plays a vital role in telling our stories and showcasing wonderful Australian talent like the Bush Mechanics,\u201d Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joining the Bush Mechanics display,\u00a0<em>Cultural Resurgence<\/em>\u00a0will showcase woven and possum skin works created by local Aboriginal community groups, such as the Mindaribba Local Aboriginal lands council, the Awabakal Elders group and various school groups with both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and their teachers with local organisation Speaking in Colour.\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn all of these programs cultural enrichment is paramount,\u201d Managing Director of<i>\u00a0<\/i>Speaking in Colour<i>\u00a0<\/i>Cherie Johnson said<i>.\u00a0<\/i>\u201cIn all of these programs cultural enrichment is paramount<i>.<\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe diversity of individuals\u2019 knowledge and abilities vary; however, we have found the hunger to learn and create is shared by all. Over the course of this program it is beautiful to watch the students become the teachers, sharing what they have learnt with their friends and family.
