{"id":5268,"date":"2020-02-26T06:12:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T06:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5268"},"modified":"2020-02-26T06:12:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T06:12:38","slug":"emergency-action-needed-from-pm-to-stop-more-deaths-from-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/02\/26\/emergency-action-needed-from-pm-to-stop-more-deaths-from-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency action needed from PM to stop more deaths from violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prime Minister must address the national crisis of women\u2019s death by violence with a\u00a0$5 billion investment in domestic violence response and full implementation of recommendations from previous inquiries, say the Greens.<br \/>\nGreens Senate Leader and spokesperson on Women, Senator Larissa Waters, said, \u201cThe Prime Minister stood in parliament this week and said \u201cthe system\u201d has failed Hannah Clarke, he must take responsibility for ending this crisis in deaths from violence.<br \/>\n&#8220;The Prime Minister has the purse strings to the system\u00a0and can fix it.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s time the Prime Minister puts words into action with additional funding for prevention and frontline services so no domestic violence survivor seeking help is ever turned away.<br \/>\n\u201cWomen\u2019s services keep warning of the urgent need for more funding for the Family Court, prevention and early intervention programs, specialist legal and support services, crisis accommodation and housing support to improve the family law system.<br \/>\n\u201cWe must listen to what these front line services say will make a difference, calls for more inquiries are not what the sector is asking for.<br \/>\n\u201cThe truth is any new inquiry into domestic and family violence is probably going to conclude what all the others have already recommended: more funding and resources for prevention and more funding and resources for crisis and support services.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Greens won\u2019t stand in the way of another inquiry but the Government has form ignoring domestic violence\u00a0 inquiry recommendations and this can\u2019t be another excuse for delaying urgently needed funding.<br \/>\n\u201cThe existing family law inquiry will have its potential effectiveness undermined if witnesses don\u2019t think they\u2019ll get a fair hearing, so the committee must be depoliticised by removing Pauline Hanson as deputy chair after her remarks.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve written to committee members asking for Hanson&#8217;s removal as deputy chair, after the Government refused to answer whether they will remove her, and I\u2019ll pursue this through the committee.<br \/>\n\u201cThis year nine women have lost their lives to violence.The government needs to stump up the funds and fix this crisis,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n<strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nSenator Waters\u2019 motion in the Federal Senate today:<br \/>\nSenator Waters: To move\u2014that the Senate\u2014 (a)notes that:<br \/>\n(i)in his statement to Parliament regarding the murders of Ms Hannah Clarke and her children on 24 February 2020, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said \u201cWe must reflect on how and where the system failed Hannah and her children, as it has failed so many others. It\u2019s so frustrating.
