{"id":5131,"date":"2020-02-17T18:18:10","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T18:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5131"},"modified":"2020-02-17T18:18:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T18:18:10","slug":"newcastle-leads-the-state-in-business-confidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/02\/17\/newcastle-leads-the-state-in-business-confidence\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle leads the State in business confidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region has recorded the highest level of business confidence of any region in the state according to NSW Business Chamber\u2019s quarterly snapshot of business conditions.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe level of local business confidence in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie is trending upwards and has improved significantly since the September quarter,\u201d Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhile Newcastle experienced a steady quarter, the Chamber recorded weakened confidence across the state, and the broader Hunter region due to ongoing drought and bushfires. Diminished household demand has weighed heavily on sentiment in both regional and metro areas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"City-skyline-cropped-for-inside.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Newcastle-leads-the-State-in-business-confidence\/City-skyline-cropped-for-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"City-skyline-cropped-for-inside.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful our business community has fared well, but we do also recognise the underlying challenges that must be addressed in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie economy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThese challenges include high levels of youth unemployment, increasing operating costs and concerns about the future profitability of businesses.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">City of Newcastle\u00a0is\u00a0developing\u00a0a new Economic Development Strategy which will consider these challenges and propose new programs\u00a0and initiatives\u00a0to\u00a0make our economy more\u00a0resilient\u00a0and competitive. Stakeholder and community input will soon to be sought for the development of the strategy.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNewcastle has strategic economic advantages that create opportunities for our continued transformation and ongoing growth,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhile the recent Business Chamber results bode well for our local economy in the year to come, we stand in support of regions across the state and Australia which have been devastatingly impacted by drought and bushfires resulting in significant decreases in economic activity and consumer confidence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The latest Business Chamber survey was sent to all business chambers canvassing 20,000 members across all regions of NSW and various business sizes.
