{"id":5115,"date":"2020-02-14T11:28:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T11:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5115"},"modified":"2020-02-14T11:28:45","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T11:28:45","slug":"stockton-holiday-cabins-relocated-lexies-cafe-closed-ahead-of-severe-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/02\/14\/stockton-holiday-cabins-relocated-lexies-cafe-closed-ahead-of-severe-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"Stockton Holiday cabins relocated, Lexie\u2019s caf\u00e9 closed ahead of severe weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle will relocate up to 16 beachfront cabins at Stockton Holiday Park and has made the difficult decision to immediately close Lexie\u2019s Caf\u00e9 ahead of the second east coast low to batter Newcastle in a week.<br \/>\nThe cabins will be moved indefinitely to\u00a0Crown Land managed by the City under reserve trust\u00a0on the eastern side of the Stockton Swimming Centre, south of the Skate Park.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle Infrastructure and Property Director Ken Liddell\u00a0said the actions are necessary to protect public assets and safety with heavy swells expected to hit the coast over the next few days, as Cyclone\u00a0Uesi\u00a0tracks south.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile we welcome the State Government declaring a natural disaster for Stockton this week, we are taking immediate action to protect important public assets.<br \/>\n\u201cThe cabins,\u00a0previously protected by about 10 metres of dune vegetation,\u00a0are now at\u00a0imminent\u00a0risk\u00a0from the swells.<br \/>\n\u201cSo we\u2019ve taken the decision to move them to community land next to the swimming pool, where they will be safely tucked away behind King Street carpark and the Stockton breakwater.<br \/>\n\u201cBy moving the remainder of the cabins, we will avoid sacrificing more sites for caravans and tents within the existing footprint of the park.\u201d<br \/>\nThe City will look to re-open the cabins on the new site after following due process, including site investigation, community consultation and planning approval.<br \/>\n\u201cOnce we\u2019ve secured the remainder of the holiday park and this weekend\u2019s threat has passed, we will look at the planning requirements for the site and lodge a DA as soon as possible to begin leasing them out again.\u201d<br \/>\nFor the same reasons, City of Newcastle has closed the city-owned building held by Lexie\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u00a0until it is again safe for the public to enter.<br \/>\n\u201cThe impact of the recent wild weather which the State Government has now recognised as a natural disaster, combined with forecast huge swells this weekend, mean we can no longer guarantee public safety at Lexie\u2019s Caf\u00e9,\u201d\u00a0Liddell said.<br \/>\n\u201cGiven this, we have had to make the extremely difficult decision to immediately close and barricade the building. We understand that Lexie\u2019s has become a much-loved part of the Stockton community and this decision was only made after examining computer modelling of the likely impact of the forecast huge swells this weekend.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is for the same reason that we have had to relocate several of the most eastern cabins at the caravan park.
