{"id":5108,"date":"2020-02-13T14:28:12","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T14:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5108"},"modified":"2020-02-13T14:28:12","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T14:28:12","slug":"climate-trigger-laws-introduced-to-senate-to-stop-making-climate-crisis-worse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/02\/13\/climate-trigger-laws-introduced-to-senate-to-stop-making-climate-crisis-worse\/","title":{"rendered":"&#039;Climate Trigger&#039; laws introduced to Senate to stop making climate crisis worse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New laws that would require climate impacts and carbon emissions to be assessed before large-scale projects are given environmental approval have been introduced into the Senate today.<br \/>\nThe \u2018Climate Trigger\u2019 Bill would ensure mining, drilling and large-scale land clearing projects would need to be assessed on whether they make climate change worse.<br \/>\nGreens Environment Spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young who introduced the Bill said a federal climate trigger was long overdue.<br \/>\n\u201cWe know a lot needs to be done to reduce pollution and put Australia and the globe on a transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile we work to reduce carbon emissions, we must stop making pollution worse.<br \/>\n\u201cThe PM and Energy Minister keep claiming Australia will meet its emissions targets \u2018in a canter\u2019, but the reality is this Government is burying its head in the sand by ignoring the clear link between burning fossil fuels, carbon emissions, and worsening climate change.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are in fact galloping towards environmental collapse and climate change is at the heart of it \u2013 the bushfires, the flooding rains, and other catastrophic weather events.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is no time to waste if we are going to prevent further global warming.
