How do we maintain green spaces,\u00a0buildings with character, access\u00a0to\u00a0transport\u00a0and shops\u00a0and a sense of community\u00a0over the next\u00a020 years with an additional\u00a035,000 residents?
\nThis is the\u00a0question dealt with through the City of Newcastle\u2019s draft Local Strategic Planning Statement\u00a0(LSPS),\u00a0a\u00a0legislated\u00a0plan outlining\u00a0the vision for land use\u00a0along with the\u00a0character and values\u00a0of our growing city.
\n\"Newcastle-(1).jpg\"Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said\u00a0the\u00a0draft\u00a0LSPS had been developed on the back of a comprehensive\u00a0community engagement program and is now on public exhibition for\u00a0feedback.
\n\u201cCity of Newcastle\u2019s Local Strategic Planning Statement will\u00a0shape our land-use planning priorities to meet community needs\u00a0and will\u00a0set out how we should manage greenfield sites,\u00a0community\u00a0land and potential development areas over the next two decades,\u201d\u00a0the Lord Mayor said.
\n\u201cThe opinions and wishes of\u00a0our residents\u00a0are essential to the City\u2019s planning process.
\n\u201cSurveys,\u00a0face-to-face\u00a0drop-in\u00a0sessions and a\u00a0young person\u2019s\u00a0drawing activity\u00a0were just some of\u00a0the ways we\u00a0gathered\u00a0feedback on how to\u00a0best\u00a0shape the way our City will look and feel in 2040.
\n\u201cOver\u00a0500 people participated in a survey which canvassed\u00a0our community\u2019s\u00a0vision for land-use and neighbourhood character with questions relating to transport, environment, housing and jobs.
\n\u201cIn 20\u00a0years\u00a0the picture of our city will look much different,\u00a0with 19,500 new dwellings and\u00a035,000 additional residents\u00a0projected for\u00a0Newcastle.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic that\u00a0the\u00a0largest\u00a0demographic to engage\u00a0with us on this draft plan\u00a0was the\u00a016-19-year\u00a0age group,\u00a0ensuring\u00a0the desires of our future\u00a0ratepayers\u00a0are reflected in our vision and plans for the future.
\n\u201cThe \u2018Big Picture\u2019 Newcastle 2040 drawing activity provided\u00a0primary school aged young people\u00a0an opportunity to offer\u00a0ideas\u00a0on what they love about their City, how improvements can be made and what needs to be maintained to ensure the City of Newcastle remains an incredible place to live.
\n\u201cOur residents value\u00a0a sense of community and opportunities for people to connect and
\nengage in their streets and neighbourhoods,\u00a0as well as special places centred on our natural environment and open space.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s now time for the broader community to have their say on how\u00a0Newcastle should look in 2040 by reviewing the draft Local Strategic Planning Statement before it\u2019s finalised and put to Council for endorsement.\u201d
