{"id":5054,"date":"2020-02-07T05:23:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T05:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=5054"},"modified":"2020-02-07T05:23:45","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T05:23:45","slug":"precautionary-action-taken-ahead-of-hazardous-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/02\/07\/precautionary-action-taken-ahead-of-hazardous-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Precautionary action taken ahead of hazardous conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle is taking precautionary actions ahead of predicted large ocean swells and high tides with heavy rainfall predicted for Saturday and Sunday (7 and 8 February 2020).<br \/>\nThe east coast low like conditions and a predicted 2-metre high tide on Sunday 9 February increases the likelihood of erosion at Stockton Beach, and potentially create dangerous conditions for coastal activities, increase potential for localised flooding and risk of fallen trees.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"StocktonBeach.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Precautionary-action-taken-ahead-of-hazardous-cond\/StocktonBeach.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"StocktonBeach.jpg\" \/>City of Newcastle will be undertaking proactive reinforcement of the sand-bag wall at north Stockton near Griffith Street and Stone Street using additional one-tonne sandbags.<br \/>\nThe following traffic and pedestrian arrangements will be in place for Stockton from Friday 7 February to facilitate these works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barrie Crescent in Stockton will be open\u00a0for one-way traffic only<\/li>\n<li>No parking zones will be established in Barrie Crescent Stockton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Stockton Beach accessways along the Mitchell Street seawall and the northern access at Stone Street will be closed and the accessways at the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club and near Lexie\u2019s Caf\u00e9 will be monitored and may be closed subject to conditions.<br \/>\nOther locations across Newcastle that may be affected by hazardous conditions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shortland Esplanade and promenades along City beaches, including the Newcastle and Merewether Ocean Baths<\/li>\n<li>All beaches in the Newcastle Local Government Area\u00a0(LGA)<\/li>\n<li>Low-lying roads<\/li>\n<li>Local roads across the Newcastle LGA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0the City\u00a0has also made the decision to close all of its sportsgrounds for competition games and training.
