{"id":501,"date":"2018-11-13T03:20:21","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T03:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=501"},"modified":"2018-11-13T03:20:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T03:20:21","slug":"labors-plan-to-help-prevent-knee-injuries-in-young-sportspeople","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/13\/labors-plan-to-help-prevent-knee-injuries-in-young-sportspeople\/","title":{"rendered":"LABOR\u2019S PLAN TO HELP PREVENT KNEE INJURIES IN YOUNG SPORTSPEOPLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/lukefoley\/pages\/1441\/attachments\/original\/1541394313\/IMG_5862.jpg?1541394313\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"m_-6254175092023285571WordSection1\">\nNSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley has announced Labor\u2019s program to help prevent ACL injuries in young sportspeople, which can have lifelong impacts.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"m_-6254175092023285571WordSection1\">\nMr Foley was joined today by young athletes at Coleman Park, home of the\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Lidcombe Waratah<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0FC,<\/span>\u00a0to announce Labor\u2019s $2 million neuromuscular training program, aimed at reducing the incidences of ACL injuries in 12-25 year olds.\u00a0\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">ACL\u00a0<\/span>(<span lang=\"EN-US\">anterior cruciate ligament<\/span>)<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0injury is a serious and debilitating knee injury that is more common in high-risk sports, including netball, basketball, rugby league, rugby union, touch football, soccer, AFL and skiing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Typically the ACL ruptures when someone changes direction at speed while playing a multidirectional sport.<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Australia has one of the highest rates of ACL injuries in the world with approximately 72 per cent of ruptures sport related.\u00a0 ACL injuries increase rapidly during the early teenage years and peak between the ages of 15 and 25. Research shows girls and women are two to 10 per times more likely to rupture their ACL when participating in high-risk sports.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><br \/>\nCostly knee reconstructions are most often required following this injury and the person can suffer lifelong consequences; almost all athletes who tear their ACL are at increased risk of osteoarthritis later in life.<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\nDespite sport related knee injuries in Australia increasing by five per cent a year, ACL injury is largely preventable.<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\nLabor\u2019s prevention program is designed to deliver neuromuscular training consisting of warm-up, balance, stretching, strengthening, plyometrics (jump training) and sport specific agility training through a smart app.<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Neuromuscular training programs are proven to prevent 50-80 per cent of ACL injuries by teaching the body better habits for knee stability by training how the knee moves, especially when jumping, landing and pivoting.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\nTrials have shown that\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">a youth sports injury prevention program would reduce the risk of ACL injuries in females by 52 per cent and 85 per cent in males.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\nLabor\u2019s ACL injury prevention plan will incorporate a smart app 15 minute pre-training program for high-risk sports as well as a \u2018Training the Trainer\u2019 program to run alongside the smart app. The program will also have the capability to follow up with teams and track the app\u2019s use.<u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\nS<span lang=\"EN-US\">imilar programs are currently delivered to professional athletes. Sporting bodies already signed up include the: AFL, AFL Doctors Association, FFA, Netball Australia, NRL, Touch Football, ARU, Basketball Australia, Australian Physiotherapy Association, and Arthritis Australia.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><br \/>\n<strong>Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201c<\/span><\/em><em>An early ACL injury can change the course of someone\u2019s life and has lasting impacts on future employment and ability to exercise.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cPrevention is key here. While our elite athletes already take part in similar pre-training programs,\u00a0<\/em><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">the biggest impact could be made at the grass roots level for young sportspeople.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cSaving kid\u2019s knees should be a top priority.
