{"id":4936,"date":"2020-01-23T07:48:42","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T07:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4936"},"modified":"2020-01-23T07:48:42","modified_gmt":"2020-01-23T07:48:42","slug":"exhibition-relives-momentous-novocastrian-anniversaries-of-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2020\/01\/23\/exhibition-relives-momentous-novocastrian-anniversaries-of-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibition relives momentous Novocastrian anniversaries of 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">\nHistory buffs can explore the impact of some of the most significant events in Newcastle\u2019s past at an exhibition called\u00a0<i>Newcastle in Print<\/i>\u00a0at Newcastle Library curated to recognise milestone anniversaries\u00a0from\u00a02019.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0community\u00a0will be given a unique opportunity to explore\u00a0how these\u00a0major\u00a0events were reported\u00a0at the time\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0reflect on their\u00a0legacy\u00a0at a\u00a0curator\u2019s\u00a0talk\u00a0hosted\u00a0at City Hall on Thursday\u00a0at 6pm.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle acting\u00a0manager of Libraries and Learning\u00a0Alexander Mills\u00a0said 2019 was a significant year of anniversaries that observed disasters, industrial unrest and social and cultural changes\u00a0in the City.<br \/>\n\u201cThe ninth year of decades throughout history\u00a0have\u00a0been host to\u00a0numerous transformative events for our\u00a0City.<br \/>\n\u201cThis fascinating exhibition revisits\u00a0positive\u00a0moments in time\u00a0like the opening of our City\u2019s\u00a0jewels, the Civic Theatre and City Hall,\u00a0as well as\u00a0tragic events that have\u00a0tested our community\u00a0and\u00a0built\u00a0our\u00a0reputation for resilience.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u00a0events\u00a0are explored\u00a0through newspaper reports and photographs published in our local newspapers available from the Library\u2019s collection.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u00a0remember the Hunter Valley floods and the Newcastle earthquake, the controversial coal strike of 1949\u00a0and the closure of BHP in Newcastle.<br \/>\n\u201cIn 1929 a great weeklong celebration kicked off in Newcastle to mark\u00a0the\u00a0openings of the Civic Theatre and City Hall. As well as the two grand openings, bands played for the community in King Edward Park, other entertainment featured a soccer tournament, competitive woodchop, surf carnival and aerial pageant at District Park, while a new floating dock was launched on the harbour.<br \/>\n\u201cTwenty\u00a0years later\u00a0saw the Australian coal strike which was the first time that Australian military forces were used during peacetime to break a trade union strike.
