\nCity of Newcastle is\u00a0praising its staff and thanking\u00a0the local community for a\u00a0hugely successful year that has seen\u00a0town centres revitalised,\u00a0environmental\u00a0milestones achieved, and\u00a0millions of dollars invested in\u00a0the city.
\nLord Mayor\u00a0Nuatali Nelmes said 2019\u00a0was a year\u00a0marked by investment in\u00a0the city\u2019s outer suburbs,\u00a0sustainability initiatives and unprecedented community engagement.

\n\u201cWith the festive season upon us and most locals including our hard-working employees looking forward to a well-earned break, it\u2019s important to celebrate our collective achievements over 2019.\u201d
\n\u201cWe continued delivering improved\u00a0public spaces for our community, including the\u00a0$2 million\u00a0Stockton Active Hub,\u00a0new playgrounds\u00a0at\u00a0Wallsend, Adamstown\u00a0and Rankin Park, and the City\u2019s first fenced dog park in North Lambton.
\n\u201cWe added new parkland in the City centre.\u00a0Reinvigorated town centres were\u00a0opened in Beresfield and Carrington,\u00a0with the multi-million projects including\u00a0new roads, footpaths,\u00a0drainage and landscaping.
\n\u201cCity staff moved to new offices in the West End where they\u2019re now under one roof for the first time. The\u00a0modern\u00a0space\u00a0and new way of working has fostered\u00a0greater communication and collaboration\u00a0within our large team\u00a0and paved the way for the\u00a0start of construction of the\u00a0City\u2019s first 5-Star hotel in the former\u00a0\u2018Roundhouse\u2019 building.
\n\u201cOur investment in sustainability means\u00a0from 1 January\u00a02020<\/a>\u00a0we\u00a0will be powered by\u00a0100 per cent renewable energy, including power sourced from\u00a0wind in addition to our\u00a0five-megawatt solar farm on former landfill at Summerhill.
\n\u201cOur efforts to become a smart, liveable and sustainable global city were recognised with three prestigious smart city awards that saw us eclipse Singapore and other major international cities.
\n\u201cMeanwhile, we continued to grow our reputation as one of the country\u2019s leading event destinations\u00a0with the Newcastle\u00a0500\u00a0attracting more than 154,000\u00a0attendees\u00a0and our beautiful city beamed to\u00a0a\u00a0national\u00a0TV audience of 1.8 million people.
\n\u201cThese\u00a0achievements only scratch the surface of what was delivered this year and\u00a0is testament to our employees who have put in a mammoth effort to deliver a record amount of work in improving the city.\u201d
