{"id":4656,"date":"2019-12-18T04:36:53","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T04:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4656"},"modified":"2019-12-18T04:36:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T04:36:53","slug":"plans-for-newcastle-beach-progress-with-feedback-from-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/12\/18\/plans-for-newcastle-beach-progress-with-feedback-from-the-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for Newcastle Beach progress with feedback from the community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has reconvened its Bathers Way \u2013 King Edward Park to Newcastle Beach community reference group (CRG) as it moves towards the next step in completing an\u00a011-kilometre\u00a0revitalisation of its coastline.<br \/>\nThe CRG met\u00a0last\u00a0week\u00a0to recap on the project to date, including the results of the 2018 engagement and design changes, and to\u00a0give\u00a0feedback on the latest plans.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"webcrop.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Plans-for-Newcastle-Beach-progress-with-feedback-f\/webcrop.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"webcrop.jpg\" \/><strong><em>Bathers Way indictitive design\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the CRG was an important community advisory group\u00a0that provided valuable\u00a0feedback\u00a0as plans are\u00a0finalised.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Bathers Way Community Reference Group provides broad representation of groups including\u00a0boardriders, residents and Indigenous stakeholders, giving us important input into the delivery of this project.<br \/>\n\u201cAt\u00a0last week\u2019s\u00a0meeting the group provided positive\u00a0feedback on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Priority-Projects\/Coastal-Revitalisation\/The-Bathers-Way\/Newcastle-Beach\">latest designs<\/a>\u00a0for the South Newcastle Beach upgrades, particularly the incorporation of the heritage stone arches of the former picnic pavilion.<br \/>\n\u201cThe project team also collected\u00a0feedback on planned public amenity improvements to King Edward Park, including viewing platforms looking over the coast, and upgrades to activate and open Newcastle Beach.<br \/>\n\u201cConsultation for this work stretches back a decade to when engagement first commenced on the Coastal Revitalisation Strategy Masterplan in 2009, and we\u2019ve consistently been gathering and implementing feedback since.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Bathers Way project has seen Nobbys, Dixon Park, Bar Beach and Merewether transformed over the past decade and we\u2019re looking forward to starting work on stage 1 of Newcastle next year after consultation and detailed design works,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0remaining section of the\u00a0Bathers Way \u2013 Newcastle Beach project is divided into two stages, and in late 2018 the City conducted drop-in sessions and an associated survey to present updated design plans and seek community feedback on the draft plans.<br \/>\nThe plans for\u00a0Newcastle Beach project\u00a0covers\u00a0from\u00a0King Edward Park to Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club.\u00a0Stage 1 includes a new skate park and bowl, exercise equipment, access improvements, new amenities, and a\u00a0kiosk.\u00a0\u00a0Stage 2 includes\u00a0a community hub in the redevelopment of the Newcastle beach pavilion\u00a0in a future project.<br \/>\nThe engagement results from late 2018 included 335 participants and showed most were broadly supportive of the project but had concerns about the intrusion of the skate bowl onto the beach.<br \/>\nThe City developed new concept plans incorporating the skate bowl into the existing footprint of the South Newcastle Beach skatepark, releasing the designs in July along with a month-long \u2018Have Your Say\u2019 period, showing\u00a0overwhelmingly positive feedback.<br \/>\nThis design is under review by City of Newcastle officers and will be revised subject to the finalisation of the coastal engineering assessment.<br \/>\nPeople can view the new Bathers Way designs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Priority-Projects\/Coastal-Revitalisation\/The-Bathers-Way\/Newcastle-Beach\">HERE.<\/a><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Webcrop2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Plans-for-Newcastle-Beach-progress-with-feedback-f\/Webcrop2.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Webcrop2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has reconvened its Bathers Way \u2013 King Edward Park to Newcastle Beach community reference group (CRG) as it moves towards the next step in completing an\u00a011-kilometre\u00a0revitalisation of its coastline.
